Echoes of the Rainbow provides an autobiographical look back at 60's Hong Kong for the director. Trouble with films like this is that they will always mean more to the maker than the audience. There's a lot to appreciate, from the wonderful recreation of the 60's, the well chosen soundtrack, and a heartfelt performance from the young lead. Outside of that, it is sometimes episodic and melodramatic, but luckily never for too long. Whenever a director makes a film like this it is both uplifting and depressing. With all the memories squeezed into two hours, real or not, it's very predictable. The best parts were when it focused on the young boy, being punished at school, going to the cinema, faking autographs etc. Overall a nice film.

Overall quite touching, and it is a good personification that time is the real robber that steals everything a person has from his life.

A very straightforward story.. and yet, it's not a dull movie. I haven't come across any movies for a while that simply tell the story. Very touching.

Family drama leavened by nostalgic observational humor. Lovely, restrained performances from Simon Yam and Sandra Ng.

2.5: This is one of the Blu-Rays I picked up in Hong Kong. I suspect the nostalgia element works much better on locals, but it didn't on me. It's hard to be nostalgic for and comforted by the foreign. Themes like this work much better for things one is intimately familiar with. Still, an interesting film, if one knows to accept that Chinese/Hong Kong romances are terribly melodramatic and weepy.

Great movie portraying lives of a simple family during the 60s. It is also an autobiography from the director, and it feels especially nostalgic for me even though I wasn't alive during that decade because they portrayed a Diocesan school.
The whole film is portrayed from the viewpoint of a little boy, experiencing life as it goes, while exposing social problems in Hong Kong in the 60s (rich-poor gap, corruption, etc). It makes you feel warm and sad at the same time.

A nice movie..great actors and a kid that lights up every single scene..
An Hong kong movie that departs from the classic gangster or comedy genre, in favour of a more dramatic genre.
Although the technicality of the direction might rise some issues of metaromanticism (a movie based mostly on the director life), the characters make a strong impact to the audience..In any case, you can see in this movie the director's sincerity and effort to tell a childhood story based on the tough Hong kong Life of the 60s.
A very touching movie.

A sweet story about family values, brotherhood - at times too simplistically sweet but a good watch nonetheless!

simple and predictable story, quite sad, good acting, heart warming but really, stealing is really bad, the kid should be punished...

A solid film which with a story that is touching and heartbreaking to watch. Strong performances from the film's leads as this a great film about family and the triumphs and hardships faced during the 1960's in HK. This is quite the enjoyable film, and one of strongest HK films to come out in recent years. Definitely one to check it if you get the chance.

Nostalgia~ Good Efforts & Intentions but the script was a bit of a let down...

Super duper melo-nostalgic film that goes into slow-mo in almost every other scene. Maybe some old time Hong-Kongers are wetting their faces off at this, but I'm not sure about everyone else.
