Movie Info

Native American filmmaker Chris Eyre directs the made-for-TV sports drama Edge of America, based on a true story and shot entirely in Salt Lake City, UT. James McDaniel plays Mr. Kenny Williams, a black man from Texas who moves out to Utah to accept a position as an English teacher at the Three Nations Reservation. He has a difficult time fitting in with the tight-knit Native American community, especially when he's asked to coach the high school girls' basketball team. He has to struggle with getting the hapless team back in shape to play against the nearby all-white high school. Also starring Irene Bedard, Tim Daly, and Wes Studi. Edge of America premiered in the U.S. at the Sundance Film Festival in 2004.more

I am a sucker for this kind of movie. Root for the underdogs! This is a chick-flick Independent sports movie centered around an Indian American highschool girls basketball team. Heartwarming, good intentioned filmmaking meant for lightheated enjoyment...

A real heart-warming tale of a black man as a fish-out-of-water on an Indian reservation. Terrific cast, using the local talent. Exotically beautiful Irene Bedard played the assistant coach, Annie Shorty with real fire. Beautiful scenery and a story about personal growth, the drive for excellence, and finding one's place in the world. In the midst of staggering poverty and crippling despair, Coach Williams (James McDaniel) was able to inspire a ragtag girls basketball team to achieve greatness. Tender moments brought tears and these were liberally sprinkled with laugh out loud moments. Coach had some growing up to do and this bunch of ladies were up to the task. Heck, it made me want to be a Lady Warrior!
