Piotr Trzaskalski's debut film, Edi, was Poland's entry for Best Foreign Film at the Academy Awards. The title character, played by Henryk Golebiowski, is a drifter who meets up with a pair of brothers (Jacek Lenartowicz and Grzegorz Stelmaszewski) that pay him to act as bodyguard for their teenage sister (Alexsandra Kisio). First-time writer-director Piotr Trzaskalski takes this slight celebration of the ordinary and makes it life-affirming.
When you mix social commentary about the Polish underclass with a Buddhist parable and gangster comedy, chances are that your message is going to get a little confused.
A moving little story with a lot more depth than you can find in films nowadays. Really, a tale of morality and gangsterism all rolled up into a snuggly little story of one kind man. It really gives you hope for humanity.
