Ian McKellen's performance as Edward II at 1969's Edinburgh Festival helped catapult the actor to fame. This play from Christopher Marlowe focuses on King Edward's obsession with his courtier, Gaveston (James Laurenson), and the scandal caused by their romance. The original broadcast broke boundaries by featuring the first televised kiss between two men in Britain.
