Consensus: Perhaps less than absorbing for non-baseball fans, but nevertheless underpinned by strong performances from the cast and John Sayles' solid direction.

Unlike other nostalgic baseball films (THE NATURAL, FIELD OF DREAMS), director John Sayles's EIGHT MEN OUT explores one of the darkest moments in the history of the sport--1919's infamous Black Sox scandal, when eight players on the heavily favored Chicago White Sox agreed to throw the World Series. Based on Eliot Asinof's 1963 book of the same name, the film investigates why the players--including the great Shoeless Joe Jackson, who many believe belongs in the Hall of Fame--would purposely lose the most important game of their lives. Set in the same time period as Sayles's MATEWAN, EIGHT MEN OUT shows how money and exploitative labor conditions destroy the purity of the game. Even though the film has no star parts and ends on a bleak note, EIGHT MEN OUT was the second Sayles film to receive financing from a major studio. Studs Terkel appears as the famous journalist Hugh Fullerton, who exposes the scandal, while Asinof and Sayles also have small roles. [More]

Reviews for Eight Men Out
For Mr. Sayles, whose idealism has never been more affecting or apparent than it is in this story of boyish enthusiam gone bad in an all too grown-up world, Eight Men Out represents a home run.
More intelligent than exciting, this is a rare gem among baseball films.
This serious movie puts some points on the scoreboard with its messages about gamblers who corrupt the sport and players who drag the game through the mud with their greed.
A fascinating survey of the events leading up to the scandal and the sad results that followed.
If John Sayles were a ballplayer, they'd call him Lefty -- not for his pitching arm but for his politics. The devoutly liberal filmmaker's political point of view is certain. It's his dramatic focus that sometimes gets fuzzy.
It's an insider's movie, a baseball expert's film that is hard for the untutored to follow.
Not like the usual baseball pictures, where we're rooting for the team to win
