Fishermen and best friends Leyton and Modesto enjoy their lives working in the small port of La Caleta in Chile. Leyton is one who seems to live life day-by-day, enjoying the attention he gets from the women in town who he feels are being neglected by their husbands. Because of this, he is equally the most loved and hated man in town. Modesto, however is the laid back type who mostly keeps to himself and his work. In a surprise move, Modesto suddenly marries the beautiful and bashful Marsha who shares his quiet personality. In a strange, behind-the-back move, Leyton begins harassing Marta who ultimate ends up on an adventure with him and not telling her husband Modesto about it. Soon, the road traveled by Leyton and Marta ends up altering the lives of everyone in La Caleta. [More]

A sloppy but stylistically incendiary handling of mystery, thriller, suspense, doldrums-of-domestic-romance and labour fraternity tropes.

Too bad the acting is uneven. And the ineptly done English subtitles will have you laughing in all the wrong places.

Not only in its plot, but also in its male rivalry does El Leyton seem like Harold Pinter's Betrayal set by the sea.

Director Gonzalo Justiniano beautifully captures the fishing village but never quite captures the story.

El Leyton never rises above the level of a soap opera, although the steamy sex and Lo's abundant nudity might make it worthwhile for some viewers.

Does a fine job of building up a sense of dread as its adulterous relationship gathers steam. So it's all the more disappointing when the movie ultimately collapses.

The story unfolds like a particularly juicy bit of small-town gossip, one that's told by a particularly vivid storyteller.
