Often it is about how a story is told, not necessarily what the story is. Pick your favorite movie, you probably can sum up the events in 10 lines, however you still watch it over an hour. That said, all the people who complain about the resemblance between epic and fern gully probably have not seen epic. There are main similarities but it is a totally different experience. Concerning the avatar thing, it is true that maybe the makers of epic wanted to show off beauty shots for environments but avatar did not patent this type of movies and it is certainly not the first. Maybe its the most successful though.

I thought it was a lot more like Arthur and the Invisibles; same premise, and a number of scenes taken straight from that movie.
