"Ultraviolet" is set in the late 21st century, when a mysterious genetic mutation has created a subcommunity of super smart, super strong super people -- causing a panicky government to try to eradicate them all. Enter Violet (Milla Jovovich), one such "hemophage" bent on protecting a young boy while exacting revenge on the people behind the epidemic.

Jovovich, of course, looks great in action (recall her performance in "The Fifth Element"), wields a samurai-looking sword (a la "Kill Bill") and sports a long, black don't-mess-with-me hairdo (eerily similar to the one she wore in "Zoolander").

For those interested, a few intriguing details about "Ultraviolet" from the production notes:

Writer-director Kurt Wimmer envisioned "Ultraviolet" as an updated comic-book twist on John Cassavetes' "Gloria" (1980), a mob tale about a former mobster's girlfriend on the run protecting a young boy (remade in 1999 with Sharon Stone).

"Ultraviolet" was shot entirely in High-Definition.

According to costume designer Joseph Porro, Milla Jovovich has "a great body." Shocker.

"Ultraviolet" also stars Cameron Bright, Nick Chinlund, and William Fichtner and opens March 3.

According to a publicity source connected with the film, UltraViolet, the new Sci Fi action film starring Mila Jovovich is going the way of Aeon Flux and will not be screened for critics. It was recently confirmed to me that the big budget film will not have a press showing despite numerous ads for the film running during such high profile shows as American Idol.

The film deals with a futuristic society at odds with genetically enhanced members and the war that results between the various factions.

Based on recent trends such as "Date Movie" and "When a Stranger Calls" opening to good numbers despite not screening for critics, one has to wonder if the new trend in hollywood will be to keep many teen comedies, horror films, and certain action films from the critics in order to boost the box office, as recent events have shown that filsm can find an audience when not screened for the press which had largely been box office death.

I think it looks pretty tight and I like Fichtner, Bright, and Jovovich, but it's definitely a bad sign if it's not going to be screened for critics.

Two reasons why a movie is released with no critical screening:
1) The studio is disappointed with the product, and doesn't want critics to shred it before the public sees the film.
2) All involved are pleased with the film, but understand that most critics typically hate all things science fiction, horror, fantasy, action-adventure or anything that in anyway resembles something that might be fun to watch. Therefore, producers will choose not to allow screenings because why let someone critique your film when you know they probably have decided they hate it before they even see it.

The critics ripped Wimmer's "Equilibrium" apart, so why even give them a chance to rip Ultraviolet apart before it hits the screens?

What do the critics know. I'll take a Milla Jovavich sci-fi thriller any day of the week. Aren't movies suppose to entertain you? If it does, then it succeeds.

This trend, if indeed it is, seems to be more and more prominent, and I've been somewhat interested in the results that follow. Could this change the nature of relations between critics and the winter new year doldrum release timeframe? It's as if critics shouldn't even bother reviewing during January-April.

This movie looks like a someone trying to copy Aeon Flux, the Matrix, and Underworld all in one movie.

The best role Mila Jovovich has had was the stoner girl in Dazed and Confused.

That was a good role, but so was the role of Adrien Brody's friend in Dummy, that was hilarious... but yeah I think this movie will royally suck. Too bad though.
