The Rock Heads Straight for Witch Mountain
Can you smell what he's cooking?

It's a brutal Hollywood truth that not all action heroes are created equal. Consider Gerard Butler, who parlayed his moneymaking turn in 300 into a starring role in the upcoming Escape from New York remake. Meanwhile, Variety reports that Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson will be starring in another Escape -- specifically, a sequel to Escape to Witch Mountain.

The 1975 original, adapted from the Alexander Key novel, revolved around a pair of orphans with psychic powers who are, for a variety of reasons, trying to reach Witch Mountain. The Disney production bleached much of Key's darkness and cynicism from the story, and performed well enough at the box office to justify a sequel, 1978's Return from Witch Mountain. (And don't forget 1982's made-for-TV Beyond Witch Mountain...no matter how much Disney wants you to.)

In the new Witch Mountain, which is being directed by Andy Fickman, The Rock will reunite with his Game Plan director to play a cab driver who crosses paths with the kids. Presumably, plenty of wacky hijinks ensue; we fully expect at least one spit take and/or dramatically raised eyebrow. The article doesn't mention a release date for the project, and we're totally okay with that.

Why is the Rock making these lame kiddy movies? What ever happened to making actions movies? The Rundown was good. Make a sequel to that.

seriously - the rundown was good fun. it didn't take itself too seriously and had pretty fun action sequences.

Whatever happened to passing the torch to the Rock like Arnie did in the Rundown? I hope people realize that Stallone, Arnold, Van Damme and Segal made millions at the box office without any real acting ability. The Rock has so much more natural charisma than most of those guys anyways.

It's odd that writers are tailoring scripts towards his strengths. He has a natural fan base in WWE fans.

I have yet to see him do a movie where he pulls out that cocky attitude that he showcased in wrestling, he's got the look, the physique.. give him some sweet action movie where he kicks *** and can utilize that personality that we all love from him!

I think he wants to be a 'serious' actor... eesh.. maybe he should go play a gay guy again

Yep, another great page from the "Largest Common Denominator" career guidebook. The Rock is on the road to nowhere. Look out for him in:

The Pacifier 2: Carlsbad Cavern Rocks!

Coming Soon.

How many more movies does he have to make before they let him go? I'm already tired of his new movie and it isn't even out yet. Or did I miss something (please God)?

put him in something like the transporter. just a movie where he can just be a cocky badass who hurts people.

throw some special effects in there, a big name villain and BOOM! Box office gold.

NO! Now they're really crapping all over one of my favorite childhood movies. Trust me when I say The Rock is not suited for this role.

I agree with pretty much everyone here. He should stick to badass action roles.
