The 2002 rerelease of E.T., which marks 20 years since the film's 1982 debut, includes never before seen footage, enhanced visual effects, and a new remastered soundtrack. E.T. THE EXTRA-TERRESTRIAL is Steven Spielberg's warmhearted classic delight for both children and adults. It tells the story of an alien creature, E.T., mistakenly left behind on Earth. When a young boy, Elliott (Henry Thomas), finds E.T. and hides him in his home, both their worlds are changed forever. E.T. teaches Elliott and his two siblings (Drew Barrymore and Robert MacNaughton), whose parents have recently separated, about caring and love while the children protect E.T. from the malevolent world of grown-ups. Elliott and E.T. become so close that they share emotions; as E.T. becomes ill, so does Elliott. The children end up going on a fabulous adventure trying to help E.T. find a way back to his home planet. The movie was originally going to be based on a story idea by director John Sayles, but after he removed himself from the project, screenwriter Melissa Mathison (Harrison Ford's wife) took over the script and made it her own. John Williams's beautiful soundtrack became forever linked to E.T. THE EXTRA-TERRESTRIAL. [More]

Reviews for E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial
E.T. isn't my favorite movie; it's not even my favorite Spielberg movie, but no one can deny the powerful effect it had on the film industry, our attitude toward extraterrestrial life, and our culture.
If you liked the 1982 film, then you'll still like the revised edition.
The story itself holds up fairly well though, twenty years later, does come off as thinner than I recalled.
Most importantly of all things, the ORIGINAL unaltered, unblemished, and gloriously widescreen 1982 version is included, so all complaints are tempered with a sense of overall satisfaction.
One of the great children's movies of all time has lost none of its charm in this 20th anniversary re-release.
It remains a timeless classic: it blew my mind when I saw it as a kid, and watching it again 20 years later, I still adored it.
This is Spielberg's masterpiece, a near perfect film directed with astonishing skill and unafraid to get sentimental ... without crossing the line into syrup.
Definitely worth seeing in the theater whether you've seen it before or not.
For the most part, however, Spielberg and Mathison have their priorities straight.
To dismiss an artist the caliber of Spielberg solely on the accusation of treacly sentimentalism is to dismiss the great American poets of our history.
When a movie has stuck around for this long, you know there's something there. It's that good.
Like Peter Pan, who also took children flying until it was time for them to grow up, E.T. represents the wonder of childhood, of a time that we must all leave behind.
