I knew this was a great film, but seeing it again makes me realize just why it's a great film.

Like the film's almost anthropologically detailed realization of early-'80s suburbia, it's significant without being overstated.
Now as then, it's a big pop myth that combines affirmation and lyricism with surprising potency.
Spielberg's first real masterpiece, it deserved all the hearts it won -- and wins still, 20 years later.
E.T. phone home. Tres palabras que arrastraron al mundo a la fiebre extraterrestre más enternecedora que jamás haya vivido.
More than anything, the tender intelligence and sweet humor of E.T. remind us how much cinematic shorthand has truncated emotion in the mad rush toward special effects.
The most wistful, the most heartbreaking film [Spielberg] has ever made.
Like Peter Pan, who also took children flying until it was time for them to grow up, E.T. represents the wonder of childhood, of a time that we must all leave behind.
Perhaps Spielberg's most personal film, E.T. is definitely his most eccentric.
Happily, some things are immune to the folly of changing taste and attitude. For proof of that on the cinematic front, look no further than this 20th anniversary edition of the film that Spielberg calls, retrospectively, his most personal work yet.
Yes, li'l E.T.'s heart light still burns bright. Now, feel free to go sob in your popcorn.
