Burt Reynolds plays Wood Newton, an ex-football player who returns to his sleepy hometown of Evening Shade, Arkansas, to settle down. But domestic life with his wife Ava (Marilu Henner), and a new career as a high school football coach, may be more challenging than he thinks. The Evening Shade Mules haven't won a game in years, and though life in the town may be quiet, it still has its share of eccentric oddballs: Evan (Hal Holbrook), the local newspaper magnate (and Wood's father-in-law);
