Faces of Death Remake Has a Story
Death lives.
by Fred Topel | August 24, 2007
Discuss Article
A phenomenon that mainly existed in the days of VHS video in the 1980s, the Faces of Death series popularized snuff flicks, featuring supposedly real killings.  A 2008 version would exist in a very different climate, and producer Rick Benattar has such a take for a remake.

"We've got a story, we've got a director, we've got a writer, J.T. Petty, who did a couple of indie films," said Benattar. "He's coming in and he wrote a script. We're sort of taking a look at in the world of Saw and Hostel, who are the people who actually go watch these movies? So we've tied that in with [the new] Faces of Death."

The original "documentaries" were compilations of death scenes, so the idea of a story is brand new. However, Benattar suggests that fans of the original will recognize some elements of his remake. "We have a narrative story which the original never had, and we also nod for the 'fans.' I use that word loosely. Guys like me who watched it as a kid, who snuck away to go watch these things. We have a few nods to those original films."

Sounds like they're trying to capitalize on the financial success on films like Grindhouse. Oh wait...

Jesus...

So they are making yet another Saw/Hostel/Teaxas Chainsaw Massacre Remake, and using the name (and name only, because I assume they are not concocting a fictional story around actual death scenes, since that's like oh, I dunno illegal).

Wow...just wow.

Again, this is what you people get for not seeing Stardust. (Yes, I know I'm harping, but come on! Look at this crap!)

Oh, and before someone jumps on my nuts... I'm well aware of Faces of Death is, being a largely staged and most fake piece of garbage with just enough real footage intercut to make the claim and sell tapes.

The point I'm making is that Faces of Death sells tapes based on the real footage (as little of it as there may actually be) and this movie.... oh whatever **** it, who cares?

****ing Hell. If your into this kind of thing, enjoy!

I have to agree with at least part of what you have to say: More people should see "Stardust." It's a terrific movie that deserves more of an audience than it's currently getting. Such a shame this gem of a movie is being over-looked.

I think Faces of Death is pretty sick and the fact that Hollywood is trying to cash in on such an exploitative little franchise makes me upset. People are free to view what they want, but I would actively boycott a movie like this because I don't think it deserves to have an audience. I'm not a super conservative or religious person, but I saw Faces of Death (one of the tapes) when I was in the eight grade and it really disturbed me....not in a artistic way!! It's ****ed up that people get off on snuff films and I don't think they really belong in the Hollywood canon, if you will.
As for Stardust, I haven't seen it, though it looks pretty freakin' good!

When I managed a theater we played Faces of Death 4 as a midnight show.
We had one girl complain. She was upset that they showed a vietnamese family cook a dog. The humans in the film didn't bother her in the least.
These films deserve nothing more than straight to video releases.

Who are you, Richard Speck? OJ Simpson? Why would you enjoy seeing actual people die?

First of all, remaking Faces of Death as a narrative film is impossible. That's like saying I'm going to re-make America's Funniest Home Videos as a sitcom. As soon as you add a narrative and characters it becomes an entirely new product. They are simply trying to dupe people into watching it by slapping a title on it that has built in name/brand recognition.

Second, the original Faces of Death are actually fairly tame compared to a lot of what is allowed on broadcast TV these days. On the evening news we are routinely shown video of people being gunned down or beaten into submission and on shows like Most Extreme Home Videos we see people getting hit by cars, plummeting off cliffs, getting mauled by wild animals... Go back and watch some of those old Faces of Death flicks again and I bet you won't find them as shocking today as they were 20 years ago.

Japan's Guinea Pig series, on the other hand....

The only reason to watch to watch Faces of Death; your fourteen and heard it was a twisted movie. Then you have competition how long you and your friends can watch it, while eating pizza, before someone gets sick or too disturbed.

Ruckas356, you're twisted and sick. What kind of childhood did you have? You seriously need mental help.

Stardust was offensively stupid. And a Faces of Death movie probably will be, too, unless they pull some really creative tricks out (and anyone these days who's going for the "vein of Saw and Hostel" is probably not going to be able to reach new planes of thought and artistry).

Stardust was okay...I don't think a revolutionary movie that everyone will love, but this Faces of Death movie will probably be bad. I mean, will it be like Saw or Hostel? How many gorno movies will we have? I'd think it would be more like Jackass...or something.

Really, really dumb idea - heck, I saw the originals and they weren't such great shakes anyway. Again, let me repeat what everyone else has said, because it can not be emphasized enough:

If it's not real footage of real people or real animals REALLY getting killed, butchered, tortured, maimed, ran over by an ambulance, skinned, etc. Then why bother? WHY?
