In America's Catskill Mountains, a lazy but lovable man, Rip Van Winkle (Harry Dean Stanton), tries to change his idle ways. Nagged by his wife, Wilma (Talia Shire), into doing chores, Rip retreats into the forest to hunt with his dog, Wolf. There he meets a group of ghostlike strangers in a canyon. After drinking a beer or two with them, Rip falls asleep, only to wake up later--twenty years later. Back in his town Rip finds out a lot has changed. An unknown politician, George Washington (Tim Conway), is running for mayor, and all of Rip's friends are either dead or off fighting in the war. Rip meets his own son, now grown up, who tells him of Wilma's death. Harry Dean Stanton is perfect as the clueless slacker Rip. Eiko Ishioka designed the sets with a lot of the same red and black silhouetting she would later use in her costumes for Coppola's BRAM STOKER'S DRACULA. [More]
