Academy Award-winning director Michael Moore examines the Bush administration's financial ties to Saudi Arabia and the bin Laden family in FAHRENHEIT 9/11, a well-researched, fast-paced, highly controversial, and important documentary that won the Palme d'Or at the 2004 Cannes Film Festival. Using actual footage and declassified documents, Moore takes a detailed look into political events both before and after the attacks on the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001, beginning with the polarizing Supreme Court decision that ultimately gave the state of Florida and the 2000 election to George W. Bush. Moore reveals how the U.S. government helped the bin Laden family return to Saudi Arabia immediately after September 11, when all other flights were still grounded; and examines military recruiting techniques in such poor areas as his own hometown of Flint, Michigan. He even attempts to get congressmen to enlist their own sons and daughters into the military. The writer-director also visits with the troops, including at a VA hospital where soldiers are having second thoughts about America's involvement in Iraq, and spends time with a family whose eldest son is fighting in Iraq. FAHRENHEIT 9/11 is a worthy successor to Moore's previous documentaries, ROGER & ME, THE BIG ONE, and BOWLING FOR COLUMBINE, once again shining a light on the past, present, and future of the US. Reviews for Fahrenheit 9/11
Moore's ability to kick off a debate -- even a vicious one -- remains priceless, as do his gifts for ridicule, for wringing laughs, shock and tears from his subjects and for shedding a spotlight on ordinary Americans.
The statistics, the footage, the accumulation of facts are staggering -- or, at the very least, fascinating.
Shows how the Bush Administration and its policies have served the interests of the haves and the have-mores with unjust domestic policies and a terrible and tragic war.
[Moore] merely stops after showing these connections, leaving the viewer to finish the job in his or her imagination. That's where the film gets most of its power.
Even those agreeing with Moore's political point of view must acknowledge that this is neither illuminating nor revelatory documentation, but skillfully wrought propaganda.
What’s startling about the controversy that surrounds the movie’s release is how little of its information and how few of its allegations against Bush are new.
As the roof burns, as the administration's dishonesty is becoming a subject even for mainstream media coverage, more questions must circulate.
It would be convenient to slap the film as a liberal fantasy, but what Moore has to say comes off neither as the words of a blowhard with archival access nor a partisan wag.
[W]onderful, messy, angry, bitter, funny, glorious... The film is loud and opinionated and even crude sometimes, and thank god for that.
A strong toxin requires a strong antidote. Certain to have some impact on the upcoming election.
Moore opens with a blitz of such cheeky sarcasm that he may well alienate and discredit himself with the very undecided and right-leaning voters he means to convert.
Moore has resorted to showing us stuff that The Daily Show covers all the time. Did you really need this film to tell you that war is bad?
These horrors, which the Bush administration does its best to hide from view, are meant to remind us of the most basic fact about war. It is hell.
A roaring, and for the most part richly deserved, hatchet job on the Bush presidency.
When Moore is willing to forget his personal animosity for a moment, his film regains its amazing power.
Those who say Moore hates America are morons (or shamelessly opportunistic filmmakers) -- Moore shows more support for the troops in this film than anyone I know
Though it's clearly a hate letter to Bush, it's a cleverly composed one, and it will succeed in infuriating and satisfying audiences in approximately equal measure.
Michael Moore stirs the political pot again with this incendiary documentary.
