Moore to Raise the Temperature on Drug Companies
by RT Staff | December 22, 2004
Blog Article | Discuss Article
Summary

Lefty filmmaker Michael Moore's next film project will be a survey of the healthcare industry, the Los Angeles Times writes. According to the Times, "At least six of the nation's largest firms have already issued internal notices to their workforces, preparing them for potential ambushes." The film, with the working title of "Sicko," may be released in 2006. Back to Article

Heheh. I can't wait to see what he discovers. I kind of like the idea of my favourite maverick documentary maker infiltrating some big company. Anyway, the health industry oughta be in good enough shape that he doesn't find anything worth reporting. One can only hope. Oh, and I can't wait (sarcasm) to read all the abusive comments people are going to start posting here any minute now because they hate this guy who, if nothing else, at least gives a damn about things, which is more than I can say for a lot of people I know.

Hey I'm 18 years old and I have a video camera and a computer. So I can video tape my friends and push clips together and make them say things on camera that they never actually said in real life. If I gain about 200 pounds I'm pretty sure I could be the next Michael Moore. What's it going to take to shut this moron up?

This looks interesting. I doubt it will do as well as F 9/11 because it's not an issue that's as constantly in the spot light but I'll be sure to see it.

Probably nothing within your power. It's the market. Sorry if that sucks, but if Ann Coulter can make a buck calling people traitors, and nobody has shut her up, it means anybody can. It's called a free country for a reason.

well first of all i like to see Moore back to his roots in taking on corporations like in Roger & Me. F 9/11 was not up to the calibre of his other works and i hope that he doesnt dissapoint. on the subject of your health care, im from canada where our health care is free (Woohoo) once when i was down in the states i had to visit a hosptial for something relitivly minor (tetnous shot) and ended up dishin out $75.00 for a single needle, thats pretty nuts considering the actual medicine in it costs under a dollar to produce

i love moore, he's one of the few people out there not afriad to speak his beliefs even if people hate him for it. His films are also very eye opening, and for those who say he isnt very american, there is no more patriotic then him. He loves his country and is just trying to make it better by getting rid of that bush asshole

Hopeful, but not optimistic
Roger & Me was a smarmy attempt to make valid points about corporatism. What was the point of going to GM headquarters to see Roger Smith, and why did he have us laugh at the poor woman being evicted at the end of the film? I found the treatment of some of the people of Flint to be cruel and demeaning, which was a huge shame. All of his films have been handicapped by his theatrics.
HOWEVER, I would LOVE to see a good film expose about Big Pharma. I just hope he doesn't shoot himself in the foot again.
Check out www.pharmablogger.blogspot.com for my blog on Big Pharma.

If we had a competent U. S. President, Moore would have a smaller market. But with that
buffoon in the WH, we need Michael to expose the incompetence.

if he dare touches the tobacco industry in the near future, his career will be ruined right away. So far this movie's looking to be pretty successful, and will seem like Michael Moore'll take another trip to Canada to interview people (ala Bowling for Columbine)

I hope the health care companies shun him completely, denying him footage, facts, interviews, etc. Not that that will stop him. He can always make up facts and deliberately mislead his audience when he needs to (Not that his audience isn't willing to be misled).

Michael Moore is a smear artist that attacks those who make profits to make his own profits. Common man? More like the symbol of limousine liberalism.

You're pretty witty.... Unfortunately it's pretty tough to respect you when you support a liar like Michael Moore. You can keep your high school degree and part time job baggin' groceries and watch all the Michael Moore you want. I, on the other hand, plan to be something great like most of the other righties in this country. Good day Sir.

How about both sides shut up? Nobody's perfect, and these are just Michael Moore's opinion. In fact, this is all opinion because everybody's different in every way. Honestly, I believe Mike Moore is doing what he believes is the right thing by his country, and that's okay with me. I may not agree with some of his ideas, nor do I enjoy some of his lame jokes, but he's got a lot of good points and good ideas. How about we stop whining and complaining to each other and actually change something? How about we stop acting "left" and "right" and just be? When we realize that this is only one man's opinion (based on some hard earned evidence - when has he been sued besides that one gun scene in Bowling for Columbine?); when we all realize that life is short and being divided about crap like this is only going to waste valuable time making things better; when we realize that we're being lied to by everybody and their mom; when we realize that there's also good people to be had on this planet; when we realize that everything means nothing and all is not lost, well then hey, maybe we'll actually get some damn sleep at night, wake up, make a difference, and let this stupid bickering go. Jesus.

I may not agree with Michael Moore on everything, but in this case, I am looking forward to this expose on the healthcare industry. He may well be the David to the Healthcare's Goliath. I think it's high time that the spotlight is aimed at the drug companies, and especially the insurance industry that is forcing more and more people to be denied treatments that could add years to their lives and cutting back on coverage while passing on more costs to the public. The healthcare industry gets its way right now with all the money handed to politicians, so it might good to have someone who can be a little caustic and forceful getting in their faces. I hope that maybe this movie might be the impetus for this country to say enough is enough!!!

Hmmm yknow your right....but you must admit....it's easy to care about your country when your making millions and millions of dollars off of your "caring"

I don't like him for the sole reason that he makes movies saying he cares and makes millions of dollars off of it....seems kindof screwed up, then again most people don't want nice things anymore they want pure hate which is what he spews.

I don't like how drug comapnies work any more then the next guy, but....key word....Company they are out to make money so really will they release teh drug taht cures cancer...hell no!....If corporations get a huge tax break will they still lay off 1000 people so their stock raises a half a point....hell yes!....everyone cares about number 1 it's sady but true....even Michael Moore he only cares about his opinion and if you have even a slightly varying opinion from his he will blast you, and make millions of dollars doing so.....Michael Moores movies are a buisness just like any other, He's succeeded in making money playing off of our hate of the Goverment the President and now Drug companies. Neat huh?

and to teh person mentioning his lawsuits....sadly teh guy who wrote farenheight 451 never followed through cause he thought it was ungentlemanly but Michael Moore compleatly ignored him when he asked Moore to change the title do to it being blatent copyright infringmant.

All you shut your traps! Stop always trying to defend everything your party believes in or does. Our greatest founding fathers, like Benjamen Franklin and George Washington didn't want them because it would and is dividing our country. But if they're so great, why are they dead? Huh? Nevermind what I said earlier. Only bad and lame people die. Continue, please.

Actually, I understand that he gives his 'millions of dollars' to charities and, eg, aid foundations for the families of soldiers. I saw him on TV and he said so himself in an interview when someone asked him what he did with the money he'd made. I don't really see why it's so important.

Let's get this straight...
Documentaries generally do not make the kind of money that fictional feature films make. Fahrenheit 9/11 is the highest grossing documentary of all-time. But Moore was making documentaries long before.

Here's a little factoid:
Raised money for the production of his first film, Roger & Me (1989), by running neighborhood bingo games in his house.

Films are not cheap to make. You have to pay a crew and interviewees a daily rate, including a cameraman, sound recordist, producer, location manager, etc. The logistics of making documentaries for Moore have gotten more complicated the more high profile his subjects become. Fahrenheit cost 6 million dollars to produce, and probably another 10-20 million to distribute. Do you have 6 million dollars sitting around? It's not as simple as grabbing a camera and just interviewing people...

My point is that there are easier ways to make money than to make documentaries. Most documentaries are not profitable, and Moore would do just as well to invest some of his money in real estate and properties if money was really what he was after. Films take money...millions of dollars to make. That is something most average people don't seem to understand. There is art to film, but it as much of a business as it is art.

The whole reason why he made Roger & Me was to stand up for people in his hometown of Flint, and to show how insensitive corporate America is. Bush and Cheney come from corporate backgrounds, and they consistently stump for their corporate buddy's interests even from the executive branch of the United States! That's a serious conflict of interest, and that's what Moore wanted to unearth. Most people have their heads buried so far up the Bible to see what Bush is doing. Conservatives would rather vote for a Christian serial killer than an upstanding liberal American. They'd rather see abortion clinic doctors murdered than a fetus aborted. Hypocrisy at its finest.

all Moore has tried to do is use his own opinion to try and counterbalence the bias media, both of which have stretched their facts and lied a bit. u cannot take any one source as truth but the reality lies somewhere in between. Moore bashers just dislike the idea of someone in opposition to their views and realy should just be more accepting that their is more than one standpoint on a situation and rarly any of these standpoint reflect the real thing

Can we keep the unfair generalizations to a minimum? I mean, "they'd rather see abortion clinic doctors murdered than a fetus aborted"? Give me a break. And let's run a "Christian" serial killer for president. Yeah. I'd love to see him get support from the religious voters.

"Super Size Me", the brilliant documentary by Morgan Spurlock that attacks the powerful food industry and it's role in the increasing rate of disease in this country, was a masterful film, and ever since it came out I've been hoping someone would step up and attack our countries biggest health problem the all powerful Pharmaceutical Industry. I got my wish, and it's bittersweet. Michael Moore has the recognition to get a documentary attacking the Pharmaceutical Industry into the mainstream, but the down side is that Mr. Moore doesn't carry a lot of credibility as a honest reporter of facts, even though the Pharmaceutical Industry is pretty blatant in it's shady practices. All I can say is I hope he stays on the facts and doesn't just run with rapant speculation like in F 9/11.
