Critical Consensus: Mangy "Dog," Rom-Com "Failure," Evil "Eye"
Summary
This week's wide releases include a pair of remakes for very different demographics ("The Shaggy Dog" and "The Hills Have Eyes"), and a romantic comedy ("Failure to Launch"). What will the critics say? Back to Article

AlienSeed writes: on Mar 09 2006 11:15 PM Just saw Hills have Eyes and...wow....Aja loves the gore. I really enjoyed this movie, and found it to be much better than the original. For most of the film, it's merely a modern update of the first one, the scenes and even alot of the dialogue is the same, its just 100 times more graphic. A couple minor details are changed here and there, and in some places, it seems like something was cut from this version....probably was since this was supposedly given the NC-17 rating originally for being Too explicit. Then during the third act, Aja really lets loose with his own material, completely new to the "Hills" story, and very disturbing. This was one of the changes I especially liked, along with the changing of the "family's" origin and their appearances. I can't remember if there was anything nuclear involved with the family's creation in the original, if there was it was only hinted at briefly...in this film, the nuclear effects are displayed full on. If you're a fan of the original, this one's a definite must see, in my opinion, it takes most of what was wrong with the first and fixes it...then pours a bucket of blood on it for color. Doesn't Matthew Mac-whatever the hell your name is in a romantic comedy spell disaster? I bet it was the dating crowd. I guess this is the math: Lady from "Sex and the City" + dude from "Sexiest Men Alive" = $$$. Bet it drops 60 percent of its gross next weekend. (Reply to this) |
