For introducing children to the joys of classical music, the Warner Bros. Bugs Bunny cartoon shorts were far wittier and much less condescending.

Following in the footsteps of the 1940 Disney classic, Fantasia 2000 features seven animated short films set to classical compositions, along with the original version of "The Sorcerer's Apprentice," starring Mickey Mouse. (This 2000 version also includes hosts such as Steve Martin, Quincy Jones, and Bette Midler introducing each segment.) The film opens with abstract butterfly-like creatures of light and darkness fluttering about to Beethoven's "Fifth Symphony" but quickly moves to the second sequence, featuring an adventurous baby whale and its elders floating along to "The Pines of Rome." Next is the "Rhapsody In Blue" segment, a tribute to 1930s New York City, based on the line drawings of illustrator Al Hirschfeld. The fourth piece is Hans Christian Andersen's tale of "The Steadfast Soldier" set to "Piano Concerto No. 2," followed by "The Carnival of Animals" which stars a yo-yo-wielding pink flamingo. The next two segments feature classic Disney characters; first, Mickey Mouse in the original version of "The Sorcerer's Apprentice," then Donald Duck in a retelling of the Noah's Ark story set to "Pomp and Circumstance." Finally, "The Firebird" closes out the film, with a sweeping woodland story of nature's death and rebirth. With its brilliant animation, well-paced stories, and immediately engaging music, FANTASIA 2000 easily matches the wondrous spectacle of the original. [More]

Reviews for Fantasia 2000
Seems to have been made by people with nothing in particular to prove.
When the shorts are good, they are very, very good, particularly those in which the animators actually try to tell a story.
An adequately entertaining diversion with moments that flirt with greatness.
Doesn't play like a celebration. In its sentimental yearning for a golden age when another one's upon us, it feels a little like a rebuke.
It is stunning in every sense of the word -- stunningly good most of the time, stunningly arch some of the time and technically stunning all of the time.
Verdadera obra de arte que vuelve a transportarnos a la infancia y que logra sacar a flote lo mejor de nosotros mismos
Firmly re-establishes that studio's leadership in animation at the dawn of the new century.
More than lives up to its clever positioning as the first movie of the new millennium.
Stravinsky's 'Firebird Suite' accompanies a beautifully rendered story of death and rebirth.
Disney has mated Fantasia with IMAX and given birth to a sumptuous giant-screen love child.
A rapturous, transporting experience the likes of which we don't see in the multiplex often enough.
Another important step forward into riskier, more ambitious artistic territory for the Mouse's animation house.
