"Fantastic Four 2"'s Silver Surfer To Be Created Using Body Suit, Not CGI?
by Senh Duong | September 15, 2006
Discuss Article
According to AICN, the Silver Surfer, who’ll be played by Doug Jones ("Hellboy," "Pan's Labyrinth"), in the "Fantastic Four" sequel will be wearing a chrome/silver colored body suit. Additionally, the face will be a head piece with a "fixed, contemplative expression” and “limited mouth movement."

Considering that the first film was fairly successful using Michael Chiklis in a body suit for The Thing (despite the pre-release ire of fans), the look of Silver Surfer will at least be consistent with him. It’ll also save the studio a lot of money.

"Fantastic Four" was a surprise hit in 2005, grossing over $154M domestically, despite a lowly Tomatometer of just 25%.

The sequel, tentatively titled "Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer," is scheduled for release on July 4th, 2007. Jessica Alba, Michael Chiklis, Ioan Gruffudd, and Chris Evans are returning to reprise their characters.

We've been waiting all these years for a Silver Surfer movie and we get a guy in silver paint? Sweet.

Could actually look better than CGI, the way things tend to look fake sometimes.

They didn't do the 4 justice, so at least they aren't going to screw them over and flatter the surfer. In keeping with this bright line of thinking, they should hire Shaq to play Galactus.

Colossus had a body suit in X3 I believe and it didn't look that bad.

Oh hell. There goes all the coolness factor, typical cheap Hollwood.

Practical effects still work just fine and often look far more realistic than some CG effects.... Batman Begins is a perfect example of why we don't need to rely solely on CG.

I prefer practical effects over cg. If the character is created by cg, it feels very alienated to me. For example, I really do not care about godlum's fate in lotr because the character is cgi. A character who is as important as silver surfer should be play by an actor instead of being acted out by a bunch of axels. However, the actor better workout a lot to stay slim or he is going to look silly in a silver spandex jump suit.

It's "gollum" and there was an actor for the cgi character...he was harnessed up in a suit which dictated what he did on screen, and he supplied the voice; its just a different style of acting..more 'high tech'.

FF was a weird movie. I was liking it to a point, but the final third of that movie is just so bad; I remember walking out of the theater not being able to decide if it was a good popcorn flick or just a bad movie. Still haven't figured that out actually...

Hmmm depends how they do it, i can see it looking cheesy, if they manage the right balance between cg and live action like superman returns did, then it could look good, if not, it will look like a guy running round in suit. Also no offence to the director, but he sucks so im not expecting anything great.

The First Fantastic Four was terrible in my opinion. To me, it doesn't matter if they throw the guy playing the Silver Surfer in a suit, or if they make it complete CGI as long as the execution is good. But either way, and for the sake of arguement if he does look good, so what? Great, Silver Surfer looks good but the rest of the movie is still going to just as bad, if not worse than the first. Most likely...the latter.

FF was good. Not great, but not nearly as bad as some of the haters are saying.
I really appreciated it more after seeing it again on HBO recently. As far as Silver Surfer goes, I thought they were going to do it CGI and I'm really concerned about him being in a suit. I hope it isn't too Power Rangers looking. Maybe they'll add some CGI over it if they need it. I think they did that with a few x-men characters. Anyways, with Spidey, Pirates, FF and a few other great movies coming this summer - it should be a lot of fun. I really think May 07 is going to go down in the records book with the highest grossing month ever-Spidey, Pirates and Shrek will see to that. I just hope these movies are well written and well done too.

They need to make the Thing look more rock like. His costume was rather poor.

"It’ll also save the studio a lot of money."

this one sentence speaks volumes about what Fox does with movies like this. who cares if it doesn't look real and cool, right? as long as they save a few extra bucks.

fuck Fox.

I have a feeling the silver surfer is going to look really bad. I was hoping they would go for a Terminator 2 effect, with CG liquid metal. That's just how I've always thought the silver surfer would look like in motion.

>>>Actually Collusus metallic-armor was done in CGI. Which to The Silver Surfer this is disapointing knowing that one of my favorite FF characters will not be done this way. The silver/chrone Body-suit sounds like Power- Rangers to me. Doug Jones derserves a whole lot better treatment then this: too bad he has signed a deal with the devil's advocate that is the money-making s**t-hole that is Twentieth-Century Fox's Fantastic Four.

I'm looking foward to ABE SAPIEN then this. 4-shame.
