Alex Proyas to Direct The Silver Surfer?
Avi Arad promises to shoot more Marvel flicks 'down under.'
by Scott Weinberg | July 26, 2007
Blog Article | Discuss Article
After having a grand old time shooting Ghost Rider in Melbourne, it looks like producer Avi Arad wants to bring more superhero movies down to Austrlia. Plus, word is that an Aussie might be helming the Silver Surfer spin-off.

First things first: According to an article at MSN.com, director Alex Proyas is being discussed as the guy to direct the inevitable Silver Surfer spin-off. Mr. Proyas is best known for Dark City and I, Robot.

Obviously no contracts have been signed yet, but having the silver dude spin off from the Fantastic Four sequel seems like sort of a no-brainer. Plus Proyas has shown his skills around the FX work, so it'd probably be a good match.

Arad promised to bring future Marvel properties down to Australia, and then he finished up with a plug for his latest project: Bratz: The Movie. Ugh.

i,robot was an awesome little surprise. I really hope they don't bring back Galactus the unfriendly rain cloud though. Just do him like he's supposed to be.

I'm not sure what they'll do with a Silver Surfer spin-off, but I like the Alex Proyas as director idea.

Hopefully they'll put more effort into making this a good comic book movie like The Crow, Sin City, Batman Begins, have shown can be done, and less like the crap Fantastic Four, X-Men, Daredevil, Electra, on and on and on.

Dark City and I, Robot were kind of grim movies, though, and I can't see Silver Surfer as a dark movie. He's never been a dark character to me, and although Proyas has shown himself to be a capable director, I'm not sure if I like the match.

I need a little picture by my name, don't I? Hmmmmm......

Very interesting choice, if it is true. I can't imagine a movie based on SS being great, though. I also can't imagine it making any money. Remind me again why it is being made?

Having the Silver Surfer in The Fantastic Four 2 film didn't help it's box office. It made less than the first one. I don't see much of a demand for this film.

Being relegated to be anothers slave continually searching for planets full of life so your master can destroy them for his gain soundss grim to me.

Great news! Dark City is one of my favorite films and The Crow is one of the finest adaptations of a comic to date. I'm looking forward to this.

I liked I, Robot, so I'm slightly hopeful. Maybe we will see a real Galactus and a smaller name character actually have a good movie made about him.

(I'm a long time Surfer fan, and although FF2 wasn't great it was miles above FF and I think the Surfer helped the movie a lot. I hate Dr. Doom in these movies he's not menacing at all!)

I like Proyas, The Crow was pretty damn sweet. So I'll be pumped about this film if he's attched to it.

Sounds like a good fit for a comic book flick for once. I'm impressed. Dark City was amazing and is far too underappreciated amongst the general public (even despite the fact it's now selling for between $5.99-$8 everywhere you go).

I don't think an SS spin off is a good idea at all.

Even with Proyas at the helm.

Proyas has got to be a step up from that FF franchise so far...

I think a Silver Surfer spin-off could be great. Darker and more grim than FF2, with an actual heavier story and better special effects. Proyas is a brilliant idea for this, he likes making films look very dark and foreboding; imagine how well the Silver Surfer would look against a dark background. If anyone can re-establish the SS after the folly of FF2, it would be Proyas. I'm about done with the Fantastic Four series.
