Roland Emmerich Slams James Cameron's Fantastic Voyage Script
Remake being scripted by National Treasure 2 scribes instead.
Roland Emmerich is gearing up to direct his long-planned Fantastic Voyage remake, and even though its screen debut is still in the distance, he recently discussed the project with Empire.
Judging from the comments left in response to our previous Voyage news items, the words "Roland Emmerich Fantastic Voyage remake" don't fill most of you with excitement, but the director isn't worried -- he knows exactly what he wants out of the picture, which is understandable; this is his second go-round with the project, and he's had plenty of time to figure out an angle. As he tells Empire, he came back to the remake after James Cameron gave it up:
"Two years ago, Jim called me up and said 'Roland, I want you to look at the script for Fantastic Voyage -- it's not there yet.' And he sent it over and I hated the script."
Apparently, Cameron's version was set in the future, and involved not one, but two teams of miniaturized scientists wandering around a colleague's innards:
"There were two submarines in the body. It was like a Navy SEALS film. And then the president of production at Fox -- me and my partner and him all go surfing together -- says 'Well, will you do it with a page one rewrite, and we won't start until you're happy with the script?' So then I said yes. The key is I won't do it unless it's going to be a good movie."
The remake's script is currently being re-written by Marianne and Cormac Wibberley, the duo responsible for National Treasure: Book of Secrets. Do with that information what you will.

on Sep 27 2007 08:19 AM I don't mind remakes. A remake to me is like seeing the same play twice, but with different actors and directors, each giving their own interpretation of the material. Both very different, but still entertaining. (Reply to this) |

on Sep 27 2007 11:28 AM In reply to this comment (#1152438) Fantastic Voyage is an incredible little sci-fi spy movie from the mid 60's starring Donald Pleasance and Raquel Welch. A team of scientists and doctors are put inside a submarine type ship, shrunk to the size of a microbe and inserted into the body of a Russian agent by a needle to perform a life saving surgery. The surgery has to be performed within a time frame before the ship and crew revert to normal size. Great story and even after 40 years, the special effects hold up pretty good. (Reply to this) |

James Cameron, who made "Aliens" and (even though I don't really like it, I acknowledge what it's done for filmmaking terms) "Titanic"...or Roland Emmerich, who made such stinkers as "The Day After Tomorrow" and "Godzilla"? ... ... ...gonna have to go with Cameron on this one. But then the guy's heart asplodes and Ben Affleck has to run away from the asploding blood asplosion toward the camera in slow motion. And then the little kid stowaway has to pilot the ship out of danger because the real pilot got died when he tried to secretly get a tissue sample of the host guy's body because he's like some awesome super soldier, and the terrorists wanted the secret. But then Will Smith killed the spy with a punch to the face and said "Daaaaaaamn." And the smoking hot, 22-year-old actress the producers think they can turn into a Ph.D genius by putting glasses on her is looking through the microscope all worried back in the big world because GUESS WHAT? The stowaway is HER kid! But it's okay because the little kid can pilot the ship because its just like his XBox game and he gets really big eyes and goes "Whooaaaa, raaaaadical!" And all the heroes laugh and high five at the same time. But then they find a tape recorder from Jigsaw telling them it was all a trick/trap and then the ship explodes and you find out you were actually watching Saw 5, brought to you by Carl's Jr! The End.
