Critics Consensus: Fast & Furious Is Running On Empty

And Adventureland proves to be a great ride.

This week at the movies, we've got speedy cars (Fast & Furious, starring Vin Diesel and Paul Walker) and a languid summer (Adventureland, starring Jesse Eisenberg and Kristen Stewart). What do the critics have to say?

Fast & Furious

Fast & Furious is the fourth installment of the venerable cars-going-vroom franchise, and unfortunately, critics say it's the weakest of the lot. The principals from the first film, The Fast and the Furious -- including Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, Michelle Rodriguez, and Jordana Brewster -- are back, and they pick up where they left off. Diesel plays Dom, an ex-con who's still bitter at undercover cop Brian (Paul Walker), but soon, the pair join forces to investigate the death of a mutual associate. The pundits say this franchise is running on fumes; though Fast & Furious features some decent stunts, its groan-worthy dialogue, indifferent performances, and lack of dramatic momentum make for a pretty middling -- albeit shiny -- package. (Check out this week's Total Recall, in which we compile Vin Diesel's best-reviewed films.)

Adventureland

Greg Mottola is building a solid rep as an astute chronicler of coming-of-age joys and pains. Hot on the heels of Superbad is Adventureland, a dramedy that critics say dishes laughs and sentiment with a deft hand. Jesse Eisenberg stars as James, a college grad who gets a job at an amusement park. With the help of Em, a cute co-worker (Kristen Stewart), his wacky bosses (Bill Hader and Kristen Wiig), and his slacker co-workers (Martin Starr, Ryan Reynolds, and others) he learns a thing or two about life. The pundits say Adventureland is bright, funny, sharply acted and deeply heartfelt; throw in a killer soundtrack, and you've got a Certified Fresh movie. (Also, be sure to see which movies Greg picked as his Five Favorite Films.)

Also opening this week in limited release:

  • Tulpan, a visually remarkable tale of unrequited love on a Kazakh steppe, is at 92 percent.
  • Sugar, a drama about a Dominican pitcher determined to make it to the big leagues and lift his family out of destitution, is at 90 percent.
  • The Iranian import The Song of Sparrows, about a runaway ostrich, is at 90 percent.
  • Forbidden Lie$, a documentary about the fallout from a fabricated memoir, is at 86 percent.
  • The Escapist, a British prison break thriller starring Brian Cox and Joseph Fiennes, is at 79 percent.
  • Bart Got A Room, a comedy about a nerdy high schooler seeking a prom date starring Steven Kaplan and William H. Macy, is at 69 percent.
  • Paris 36, a period piece about some neighborhood friends who attempt to mount a musical, is at 65 percent.
  • Lifelines, a dark comedy about a family whose secrets are brought to light by their therapist, is at 62 percent.
  • Enlighten Up!, a documentary by a devoted yoga practitioner who attempts to use the ancient art to transform her skeptical subject, is at 57 percent.
  • Gigantic, starring Paul Dano and Zooey Deschanel in an indie comedy about the strange relationship between two wayward twentysomethings, is at 54 percent.
  • Alien Trespass, an homage/parody of 1950s sci-fi flicks, is at 31 percent.

Finally, props to Speaker for the Films for coming the closes to guessing 12 Rounds' 23 percent Tomatometer.

Call me crazy...but if I turn off my brain, I might enjoy "Fast and Furious". I haven't any yet, but I doubt I need to. I might be wrong.

I turned my brain off going in, and the movie still was not good. Definitely skip it... I'll be seeing Adventureland this weekend.

Because its the same old movie, it doesn't do anything new. There is nothing new even in the terms of the race scenes, there just boring. LOL also the movie takes its self WAY to seriously. Trust me man, just rent it.

Tomorrow, I'm going to see Monster VS Aliens. Not in 3-D I'm still not convinced that travelling 30 more minutes and paying twice the price is worth it. Might go see Avatar tough...

I can't wait to see Fast and Furious because I find YouTube videos too intellectually taxing.

No surprises here about about Fast and Furious. I didn't like the first one and I didn't bother with the second one, the third one I actually found somewhat enjoyable, but I won't bother with this one in the least. Too bad it'll top the box office, I'm praying that Adventureland will beat it though.

I like Vin Diesel and all, but I can't sit through that nonsense. It looks awful.

Doesn't that T-meter for Adventureland put it as the best (or close to the top) reviewed wide release of '09? Has anything come out with a better percentage this year?

This movie looks to match the first one by Rob Cohen despite the negative critism, this movie is still going to be on my list of movies to be watched on the big screen because of more action and insane speeding.

If there is one place I do not want to turn off my brain, it's the movies. I never wasted my time with any of the Fast and Furious dreck, I don't plan to now. So, I'm glad to see Greg Mottola is 3 for 3 in his short filmography. I've lived his work so far, and I'm eager to see Adventureland. I've also heard great things about Tulpan, another coming of age film, btw, but definitely something more on the subtle side for those who love stories told through expressive images, like great foreign films do. But no one who would even consider watching Fast and Furious would like that kind of movie, for sure. %)

Well I never planned on seeing it in theatres. Looks like renting it would be a mistake as well. Maybe if it pops up on TV.

It may be running on empty but it is currently on pace for a $60million opening weekend, based on the approx. $27mil friday gross.

Finally, I went to see Monster vs Aliens in 3D. It was cool. And I'm happy that next week I won't have time to go to the movies. Between Hannah Montana and Dragonball, not much choice next week (well, ok, I will probably go see Dragonball later on, just because I want to know what I'm talking about before callng it ****.)

Good idea taking those tricky "the"s out of the title. Got to keep it simple for the target audience. The next one should be called "Movie Good Arraagghh".

I thought that was going to be the title of the next Hulk movie.

I wouldn't call Fast&Furious a "crap movie". I doubt anyone leaving negative comments has even seen it. The plot could be better, or at least give up trying to be at all serious. Still, it's just mindless entertainment... a guilty pleasure.

Adventureland is only doing so well because of the publicity from Twilight's, Kristen Stewart.
