RT on DVD: Fast & Furious, Dragonball: Evolution, Battlestar Galactica

Plus, Polanski gets the Criterion treatment.

If you missed last weekend's Comic-Con (see RT's full coverage here), you're in luck; it's a particularly geeky week for DVD. Kicking things off are Fox's live-action adaptation of one of Japan's best loved mangas (the disappointing adventure Dragonball: Evolution), the fourth in a franchise for car lovers (Fast & Furious, starring Vin Diesel and Paul Walker), and DC's latest animated feature (Green Lantern: First Flight). But what could be nerdier than this week's new TV series on DVD? Pick from Battlestar Galactica Season 4.5, Battlestar Galactica The Complete Series, Dr. Who, Torchwood, and Joss Whedon's Dollhouse Season One! Read on.

Fast & Furious -- 28%

If the previous three franchise films were too fast, too furious, then the fourth flick about gear heads and racers is what we like to call "faster and more furious to an even greater degree." Of course, it's also about brooding bromance, as we find former buds Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel) and Brian O'Connor (Paul Walker) together again for the first time since 2001's The Fast and The Furious. Reunited under tragic circumstances, Dom and Brian must work together undercover to infiltrate the inner circle of a drug runner; naturally, we get car chases, explosions, and hot eye candy galore.  DVD extras make for a great time if you're into autos, as you'll find plenty of features reveal the making of the film and the many import and muscle cars that appear -- as well as the Diesel-directed short film Los Bandeleros, which shows the gang's adventures in the Dominican Republic leading up to the fourth film. Yes, a prequel to the prequel; Fast and Furious 4.5?

I might rent Fast And Furious, only because it goes back to the style of the first movie, which is arguably the best of the bunch. The Diesel-directed prequel sounds interesting.

Staying far and away from Dragonball: Evolution. And why is it called Evolution anyway? What has evolved? 'Cuz it sounds to me like the movie sucked major Dragonballs. (Come on, you knew that pun was coming.)

Never really got into Dollhouse or Battlestar Galactica, but I still have Coraline to watch.

88% for DB:E? O_O That has to be a typo.

I'll check out The Green Lantern: First Flight somewhere down the line, I've never seen one of the DC animated movies, but I actually want to see this. I'll probably also rent, someday, Dragonball since I'm just curious of how bland it is.

See "Batman: Mask of the Phantasm". See it NOW.

Anyway, this week's film's are a eff load a eff.

Batman: Mask of the Phantasm, Batman: Sub Zero, and Wonder Woman were all pretty good. I've heard good things about Superman: Doomsday but haven't had a chance to see it. Batman: Gotham Knights was good if you're really into anime (I thought the novelization was much better).

Green Lantern looks really good and I wish I had the money to get it. I saw Wonder Woman at WonderCon and it was so fantastic I got it the day it was released. I'm hoping GL will be as good as WW.

Like Rob Zombie's Halloween, I refuse to pay money to see Dragonball Evolution. I love DB and DBZ too much to support that crap in any way.

Yeah, that 88% for Dragonball was definitely a typo.

I will probably be getting Battlestar Galactica, the complete series. I just became a huge fan this year, and rented the first three seasons, and Razor. I haven't seen the fourth season yet, but I know I'll love it. I think I'll take the bullet on it and get the complete show. I think all of the bonus features may make it worthwhile. Also, I believe DVD sale price the first week is $179.99. I've got to catch up before Caprica premieres next winter.

Also, I will be getting Fast and Furious. Best in the series since the first one. I will also pick up Dollhouse. The season started a little jumbled, but cleared up and closed out very impressively. I have always trusted Joss Whedon to not let me down, and he has not. I am looking forward to next season.

Dragonball: Evolution = 13%
It would be nice to have an anime adaptation at 88%
Maybe for "Cowboy Bebop," eh?

Akira is at I think exactly 88%. Though its an anime film that is an adaptation of a manga. Its fantastic, though.

Anyway...

Green Lantern... maybe, but I think I'd actually rather pick up the Wonderwoman movie from a while back before I'd rent Green Lantern.

I NEED to see Battlestar Galactica at some point, I've heard so many great things about it.

UGH, thanks, Jen! Now William H. Macy will be in my nightmares for months.

And of course, Big Man Japan and Torso. Both of those are right up my alley. I love me some good ol' Giallo. But really, the one I truly need is Big Man Japan, hopefully it will prepare me for the forthcoming insane exploitative japanese acid trip of a movie that will be ROBOGIESHA.

What, you think I'm an anime fan and I haven't seen Akira? Several times? Or read the manga? Several times? And own all of it? :D

But I meant anime-to-live-action, of course. I was never a real Dragonball fan to begin with, but nothing in any of the credits or any of the clips was even remotely like the original or had any of its (albeit-silly) charm; I can't imagine that hard-core fans would want anything to do with it.

Oh, and apologies for double-posting, but "Repulsion" is one of the most terrifying movies I've ever seen. I watched it two Halloweens ago after seeing it on one of RT's scary movie lists. I really recommend anyone who likes psychological horror films check it out.

Dragonball Evolution really sucks balls. The only thing even remotely enjoyable about that movie was the way it looked, that's about it. I'll probably rent Fast and Furious because it was very enjoyable the first time around so I want to watch it again.

That's it for me, though.

Nothing good this week really. Dragonball Z looks pretty terrible. And Fast & Furious was just terrible, the worst in the series. Looking forward to whenever I, Love You Man and Adventureland come out.

Yes please, don't give DB your money. Listen to the martyrs when they tell you it is a waste of your time and money and maybe 5 years from now we will get a real attempt at Dragonball, not this lame "adaptation" cash in.

Battlestar Galactic was one of best shows I've ever seen, if not The Best Show period. For those of you expressing interest in the series who haven't seen it yet: you have alot of great tv to look forward to.

It's good to know that a complete set of the whole BG series exists. I would enjoy watching it again in like ten years from now. I did that with Babylon5 (another favorite show) and, except for the pitiful first season, it was great all over again. (I don't know how Babylon5 survived Season 1, but thank the gods for small miracles, because the rest of it was as good as it gets.)

I hope nobody buys or rents Dragonball.

We as money-spending moviegoers need to stop giving money to movie studios to see crappy movies. Studios care more about Easy-To-Market movies, than they do Good-To-Watch movies, because Easy-To-Market movies are what the masses pay to see. But it's a tough game, because how do you know a movie is crappy, if not only until after you've seen the movie?

Step 1 is to clean up and legitimize the professional reviews process. Websites like this and other news media platforms should only post professional writers that know how to write a movie review without giving away spoilers, and all the other so-called 'reviewers' should go and get a job. Another job.

Step 2 is for us to seek out movie reviews from trusted 'professional' movie review writers, and heed their warnings or recommendations. We should all have the ability to review writers' previous reviews, determine which writers we share a common taste in movies with, and use their opinions going forward as to what movies are worth our money.

Everyone seems to know (for example) how bad Dragonball was. No surprise there: it has a 13% on the tomatometer. But everyone seems to know how bad it was, because those same Everyones paid to see it. And alot of Everyones recently paid to see the The Ugly Truth, which is currently at 15% on the tomatometer.

To all you Everyones: I know you loved the source material, or the two leading actors are likeable and hot, but...resist the urge! I beg you! I know you want to see a great Dragonball movie so bad that you'll believe 87% of the critics are wrong. But they are not! Please! You will not like a movie that's pulling a 13% on the tomato-meter! For the love of God, stay away from 13% movies!

I have spoken.
