Reviews for The Fifth Empire
Hypnotic. Mr. Oliveira’s aesthetic syncs up with his main interest: capturing characters’ words and gestures in real time as they work through philosophical and political conundrums while remaining largely oblivious to the physical world around them.
Any hope that the great Portuguese master is in one of his more accessible moods is quickly dashed as the film grows progressively darker, talkative, and stubborn in the extreme.
