Griffith was once quoted as saying all you needed to tell a story onscreen was a girl and a gun, and filmmaker Gustav Deutsch uses both as part of his diverse variety of ingredients in this experimental feature. Like many of his previous works, FILM IST. a girl & a gun was constructed entirely from found footage; Deutsch scoured film archives around the world, and assembled bits and pieces of what he discovered into a striking visual collage he has divided into five acts -- Genesis,
Paradeisos, Eros, Thanatos, and Symposion. Beginning and ending with images of gunfire, FILM IST. a girl & a gun incorporates excerpts from wartime newsreels, educational films, forgotten European dramas, travel documentaries, silent Westerns and extreme porn loops, among many others. (Some of the clips from rare sex films were drawn from the archives of the Kinsey Institute for Research in Sex, Gender, and Reproduction.)
