A... Madonna's directorial debut, Filth and Wisdom, is a hilariously sexy tale of three roommates who must delve into mischievous and naughty behavior in pursuit of bigger and brighter futures. A Ukrainian immigrant, A.K. (Eugene Hutz), finances his dreams of 'trans-continental superstardom' with his band, Gogol Bordello, by turning tricks as a role-playing cross dresser. As A.K. literally whips the privileged of London into shape, he also secretly pines for the object of his affection, Holly (Holly Weston), an aspiring ballerina looking for her big break while moonlighting as a slippery stripper. Meanwhile, Juliette (Vicky Mclure) steals medicine from her pharmaceutical job in hopes of quenching her dreams of helping Africa's youth. Filth and Wisdom is every bit as erotic and playful as it is poignant and touching, revealing the universal struggles we all face in our pursuits of happiness. --© IFC Films [More]

An otherwise tired vanity project.

Ragged, uneven and potholed with some dire dialogue and performances, the film's cockeyed optimism and likable leads conspire to bring a smile by the time it's done.

Bad, but not in any way that's uncommon for an indie film about struggling artists in the big city.

If this were the first film of a 17-year-old who got a camcorder for his birthday...it could be called a promising first effort.

Madonna has made a career out of toying with image and ego, but this is a vanity project in the smallest sense possible.

Despite its many shortcomings and an ending so mushy and neat it would embarrass Richard Curtis, Madonna has done herself proud.

Madonna's directing debut shows that the megastar did not learn a lot about film craft and creates a routine, occasional amusing debut oeuvre. It should have been a more mature work and it is not.

Not surprisingly, the musical selections are fittingly raw but with the exception of supporting actress Francesca Kingdon everything about the film is amateurish.

Pop go the dialectics in Filth and Wisdom, a tale of bumping and grinding your way to happiness from the hardest-working hard body in show business.

Most of it seems like pointless goofing around, offering lots of filth and very little semblance of wisdom.

Taken as an argument for better living through hedonism, 'Filth and Wisdom' is unconvincing. In the end, it begs the question posed by a pop sensation of a different era: Is that all there is?

This is a very deeply non-caring movie. I liked Hutz when he sang. I imagine Gene Shalit ate his heart out when he saw Hutz's moustache.

Ineptly written and helmed story of three Londoners, although quite bad, does have a few redeeming features.

Message to the director: Don’t quit your day job just yet, but in the category of multidisciplinary artists moonlighting as filmmakers, I’ll take you over Julian Schnabel any day.
