A Ukrainian immigrant, A.K. (Eugene Hutz), finances his dreams of 'trans-continental superstardom' with his band, Gogol Bordello, by turning tricks as a role-playing cross dresser. As A.K. literally whips the privileged of London into shape, he also secretly pines for the object of his affection, Holly (Holly Weston), an aspiring ballerina looking for her big break while moonlighting as a slippery stripper. Meanwhile, Juliette (Vicky Mclure) steals medicine from her pharmaceutical job in hopes of quenching her dreams of helping Africa's youth. Filth and Wisdom is every bit as erotic and playful as it is poignant and touching, revealing the universal struggles we all face in our pursuits of happiness. --© IFC Films [More]

Reviews for Filth and Wisdom
Curiosity-seekers may trickle in, but despite the deliberate move to release the flick unrated, there's nothing in here to merit a raised eyebrow.
In technical terms, more professional productions than this are filmed and cut on iMovie, by ten-year-olds, a thousand times a day.
At 83 minutes, it's tedious, pretentious, and just plain boring. I kept waiting for something to happen, but nothing does.
This is a terrible, terrible worthless movie that you shouldn’t give any time to.
Either Madonna failed to successfully guide her movie to a coherent state of mind or she simply has no gift for filmmaking. A case could be made for both, though the latter is an awfully tempting summarization of Filth and Wisdom.
Filth and Wisdom is pretentious and structurally flawed, never truly coming together as a coherent work.
Fans of Eugene Holtz may get a brief charge from his Ukrainian-inflected irony that saturates every word he utters, but all others should beware of giving this sloppy film the time of day.
Most of it seems like pointless goofing around, offering lots of filth and very little semblance of wisdom.
Madonna's direction isn't half-bad...too bad she chose a poor script teeming with uninteresting characters
For there to be balance in the universe, good movies must alternate with bad ones. This is obviously one of the latter.
Bad, but not in any way that's uncommon for an indie film about struggling artists in the big city.
Imagine having a philosophical discussion with Madonna. I imagine it would be like having one with any other high school dropout.
Uniformly badly acted down to a loaf of bread, this eye-bleedingly stupid and witless movie is proof that just because someone is considered an icon doesn't mean she should be allowed near movie cameras.
While Filth And Wisdom may not quite inhabit the same Hall of Shame as Shanghai Surprise, Body of Evidence and (God save us) Swept Away, it's likely to be forgotten as quickly as most of them.
Filth and Wisdom feels like the kind of airless, desperately chic movie written by and for young people living on their own for the first time.
Leave it to the Material Girl to confound all knife-sharpened expectations, even in mediocrity.
As narrator-star Eugene Hutz puts it, "Without filth, there can be no wisdom." As deep thoughts go, this seems too feeble to provoke much in the way of actual thought, let alone to hang a movie on.
