Critic Review - Chicago Reader

If director Gus Van Sant had always been a hack it wouldn't matter so much, but personally I find this form of licking the audience's cheeks like an obsequious puppy deeply offensive.

"...Licking the audience's cheeks"?!? What is THAT? He (Van Sant) did a MARVELOUS job on this film. I found it very inspirational, as well as educational. I am a Junior in high school, and we watched this in my Expository Writing class. I learned a lot from this film.

Well I'm not a professional movie critic, but I do like to get my cheeks licked. I enjoyed this film and found it to be a pleasant surprise. I'm in my 40's, and I think that this movie reaches across the age spectrum.

I agree that Van Sant has always been a hack but this was a good film. Mainly because it was a well told story. Well told enough that it won the Nicholl Fellowship Screenwriting Award. Also the acting was well done. Even a bad director like Van Sant couldn't ruin this story.

He doesn't say Van Sant is a hack, he says the opposite.
