In 1936, Universal Pictures produced a spate of movie serials based on Alex Raymond's popular FLASH GORDON comic strips. Starring Buster Crabbe as the quintessential Flash--an all-American football player-turned-intergalactic space traveller--the serials virtually set the standard for science-fiction moviemaking with their then-visionary special effects and production design. This collection presents the 12-episode serial FLASH GORDON CONQUERS THE UNIVERSE, which continues Flash's perennial battle against his arch-nemesis and evil emperor of the planet Mongo, Ming the Merciless (Charles Middleton). This time around, Flash and his sidekicks, the beautiful Dale Arden (Jean Rogers) and scientist Dr. Zarkov (Frank Shannon), vault into outer space to prevent Ming from conquering Earth with a mysterious plague known as "the Purple Death."
