Filmed in Beijing and New York, FLEEING BY NIGHT tells the story of Shaodung (Lei Huang), an American-educated cellist who returns to China for his arranged marriage to Ing'er (Rene Li) the daughter of a wealthy opera house owner. Once back home, however, Shaodung finds himself drawn to singer Lin Chun (Chao-te Yi), whose impassioned rendition of the opera "Lin Chun Flees By Night" strikes a deep chord in both him and his fiancée. The three become friends, with Ing'er unaware of the deeper attraction between the men. Unfortunately Chun is trapped in servitude to the master of the company, who pimps him out to a rich playboy (Lai-jen Tai), and Shaodung is deeply closeted, which hinders him from acting on his desires. Set primarily in the late 1930s (but ultimately spanning decades), the film effectively uses China's pre-revolution cultural contrasts to parallel its characters' own identity crises. Directors Li-Kong Hsu and Chi Yin allow the story and performances to unfold deliberately and delicately. Homoerotic content is fairly minimal in the film, which focuses more on rich period detail and how the joys and sorrows of love can shape the course of personal histories. [More]

Reviews for Fleeing By Night
While it's all quite tasteful to look at, the attention process tends to do a little fleeing of its own.
[Lin Chung's] voice is rather unexceptional, even irritating (at least to this Western ear), making it awfully hard to buy the impetus for the complicated love triangle that develops between the three central characters.
[Liu's] artistry deepens here, as Ing'er grows from overeager girl to knowing woman, one whose dilemma is as vexing as any she heard sung from the stage of her father's opera house.
The film makes a tragic error by going on for too long, trying to mirror every subsequent event in Chinese history: war, revolution, Communism, etc.
An exquisite love story directed with admirable subtlety and sensitivity by Li-kong Hsu and Chi Yin from a superb script by Hui-ling Wang and Ming-xia Wang.
An overwrought Taiwanese soaper about three people and their mixed-up relationship.
The film has the courage of its convictions and excellent performances on its side.
This dreadfully earnest inversion of the Concubine love triangle eschews the previous film's historical panorama and roiling pathos for bug-eyed mugging and gay-niche condescension.
It's a square, sentimental drama that satisfies, as comfort food often can.
