Bill Lawrence Explains Fletch Departure
The Scrubs creator comments on the oft-rumored movie.
Both Scrubs and Fletch fans were intrigued by the prospect of Bill Lawrence making feature film debut with Fletch Won. When he mysteriously left the project, speculation thought the worst of The Weinstein Company, but Lawrence says it's much simpler than that. He just had to go back to work on his TV show."I couldn't get any actor that we could all agree on to play Fletch," said Lawrence. "Zach [Braff] ended up doing his own movie that also fell apart which is a drag because he should have done Fletch. Harvey [Weinstein] and I never really landed on a person that we both liked that much, which sucks. So I couldn't get it going fast enough. I had one summer."
Lawrence also added that the Weinsteins' option on the Fletch property expired on September 1. He theorized, "I think either Weinstein Company will retain the rights by making a movie really lightning fast, like before the end of the summer because they have to, or I think it will be back in that weird film turnaround that it never gets made which is sad."
The future looks bright for Lawrence though, as there are no hard feelings with his producers. "I'd work with Harvey again. Man, he's an interesting dude. I still talk to him once in a while."

Wow. A Fletch movie made at lightning speed. Wasn't that already done - twice?
