The first drink gets you drunk

This movie clearly showed that the alcoholic cannot take the first drink because that it is drink that tells him it is okay to take the next drink. Very powerful, especially when Denzell grabbed that one bottle on top of the refrigerator...Very powerful!

I certainly agree an alcoholic can't stop at 1 but I hardly found the scene with the mini-bottle of vodka powerful--- it was painful predictable.

I live with alcoholism, I avoid drinking but if I have one it's gonna turn into 30 more one mores, and also take me months to 'quit' again.

Agree with Chris. However, it perpetuates the myth that someone in an alcoholic haze can function as well as someone who isn't.

I actually think this film was right on par with Argo. This was an unbelievable showcase of acting talent, albeit drawn and a little pretentious. But nobody ever selected the best films of any year while overlooking self-indulgence in the process.

whoa, hey, slow down there. I liked this film, don't get me wrong, but Argo danced circles around it.

I get that there are varying layers to wade through with alcoholism . . . but in my opinion this movie plodded along . . . i walked out at the 2/3 point.

Denzel does great job as usual. Overall the movie didn't do much for me and I was particularly disappointed with John Goodman's role which tried to depict a drug dealer in a humorous light. Drugs ain't funny and drug dealers are the lowest form of life.

Great movie that tells more than one story, but does it with respect and great insight. Kudos to Robert Zemeckis and Denzel. And hello Kelly Reilly! Splendid performance.

A movie with terrific insight into a man whose demons almost destroyed him. This movie will be understood by many alcoholics and addicts as only those who have lived can relate. I would not recommend it to someone new in recovery. Too many people think alcoholism isn't a disease but it is. Otherwise why would a person continue to drink and drug while slowly killing themselves - a slow suicide. It's easy to judge someone who does not understand how frail the human mind can be.

As an alcoholic, 81 years old, who can say I'm sober TODAY, I think your post is well put.

Good representation of an alcoholic, those that don't know what it's like to know one won't understand it as much.

This is a Movie about just another Drunk that can't handle his Booze. There is nothing to be learned here A movie I'm sure Denzel Washington did for the money not the script. Save you money and your time don't go see this movie. If you think you must see this movie just wait a week it will be a Red Box soon. Not being mean its really just that Bad.

was a great film about the man and his personal struggle though imo they chickened out in the ending and has to have him suddenly "redeem" himself though I suppose it wouldn't be any other way

This movie just looks terrible. Nothing this guy can say can justify the fact that he was DRINKING on the job...

There's more to it than that. Something wrong happend to the back of the plane, and it wasn't preventable. The crashing had nothing to do with his drinking. But still, he shouldn't have been drinking, no doubt.

I actually have a confession to make-- I haven't really seen the movie yet, but after hearing that there's more to it, I guess I'll give it a go. When it comes out on DVD, I mean.
