Their fateful unions begin when quarry workers Barney (Stephen Baldwin) and Fred (THE FULL MONTY'S Mark Addy doing an amazing American accent) meet Betty (Jane Krakowski of ALLEY MACBEAL fame) and Wilma (Kristen Johnston of 3RD ROCK FROM THE SUN) at a Bedrock burger joint. Betty is a bubbly waitress, and Wilma, as it turns out, is a poor little rich girl who has run away from the prospect of a loveless marriage to once-wealthy Chip Rockefeller (DHARMA & GREG's Thomas Gibson). Desperate to marry Wilma for her fortune, the scheming Chip offers the newly-in-love Betty and Barney, and Wilma and Fred, an all-expenses-paid trip to his Rock Vegas casino hotel, planning all the while to get Wilma back into his clutches. This brightly colored comedy filled with references to old Elvis movies, is, at times, so intentionally silly that it's absolutely hilarious (picture a giant fartosaurus, Joan Collins doing a spit take, and Mark Addy and Stephen Baldwin in show girls' dresses). But, though there's plenty of child-friendly sight gags involving cute dinosaurs, it's not for kids. Then again, neither was the original cartoon series which aired first during adult prime time. Reviews for The Flintstones in Viva Rock Vegas
Much like a hunk of rock candy--sort of interesting-looking but ultimately none too fulfilling.
If you are a kid -- or the parent of a kid -- this movie may, in fact, be your best bet out there. But if you are neither, Viva Rock Vegas is much more of a gamble.
Viva Rock Vegas is nothing more than eye candy, and not a very tasty piece at that.
Kids are certain to love The Flintstones in Viva Rock Vegas, but Mom and Dad won't mind going along -- it's a yabba-dabba-delight.
It's not delightful or funny or exciting, and for long stretches, it looks exactly like hapless actors standing in front of big rocks and reciting sitcom dialogue.
Look beyond the perfunctory dinosaur flatulence jokes, and Viva Rock Vegas is really quite sweet and clever.
Kids under 10 who love the cartoon, are apt to really enjoy this movie. Adults who remember the show with fondness, will find it easier to take than many kiddie matinees they have suffered through.
The Flintstones in Viva Rock Vegas stumbles at its outset by setting up an adult premise inevitably undone by the film's aspirations to family entertainment.
The Flintstones in Viva Rock Vegas is cute and funny, with plenty of slapstick and cuddly creatures for the kids and enough adult wit to keep parents reasonably amused.
What’s with the film’s odd preoccupation with such adult themes as class, money, and sex?
A convoluted mess that will likely appeal to neither the young nor the old.
The new Flintstones movie is bad. Prehistorically bad. Neolithically bad. Bad enough that you should take your youngsters and run in the opposite direction to My Dog Skip.
You'll find yourself scanning the screen for interesting geometric shapes ... since the script won't hold your attention.
The cast from the first Flintstones movie has gone off to break rocks somewhere else.
The first live-action movie of The Flintstones in 1994 was a Tyrannosaurus wreck, a production design in search of a story. Now director Brian Levant has made a prequel ... that's almost as dumb.
