The success of this picture (perhaps Moore's best in the Bond series) can be attributed to the marvelous direction of Glen.

In this outing, the renowned British double agent must locate a weapons system known as ATAC, which controls Great Britain's submarines, after it is sunk on a ship in the Ionian Sea. While he must contend with a formidable foe in the villain known as Kristatos (Julian Glover), he does have the lovely and talented Melina (Carole Bouquet), the daughter of a scientist killed by Kristatos, on his side. For fans craving their old favorites, Blofeld, Moneypenny and Q all put in appearances. The stunts come fast and furious, most notably a breathtaking race down a ski slope at the film's opening. Academy Award Nominations: Best Original Song ("For Your Eyes Only"). [More]

Reviews for For Your Eyes Only
If ever a Bond film could be described as understated, this is the one.
One of the better Roger Moore vehicles, thanks to a script that overflows with exotic locales and extreme adventures for our hero to undertake.
Roger Moore has crumpled his comic-strip good looks into something approaching world-weariness, and the newfound maturity in his expression is reflected in director John Glen's style, which goes for the measured and elegant over the flashy and excessive.
...suffers from a disastrously plodding midsection that ultimately casts a pall over the remainder of the proceedings...
By the end of the '80s, Bond would be viewed as something of a relic, but at least the decade opened with an enjoyable outing.
The Bond series' most superb action assembly, plus a terrific performance from Roger Moore.
Most of the outlandish silliness of a few other Bond issues is mercifully absent, replaced by a greater emphasis on believable thrills. The result is highly satisfactory.
Director John Glen took care of Bond for most of the 80s, arguably the agent's weakest decade. That said, his debut showed promise in its restraint.
First-time director John Glen knows what's needed to create suspense...put the series' trademark wit, women, and song alongside the high-stakes adventure of a more brutal 007. [Blu-ray]
