I'm Sorry Peter Jackson: Rob Minkoff to Direct Jet Li - Jackie Chan Collaboration
by Jen Yamato | August 25, 2006
Discuss Article
The most recent update in the speculation race surrounding Jet Li and Jackie Chan's planned co-starring venture names kid-flick helmer Rob Minkoff to direct, not the Lord of the "Lord of the Rings" Peter Jackson -- which may or may not please fans eagerly anticipating the flick.

Jackson was rumored to be in the running to direct the Jet-Jackie flick based on the Chinese legend, "Journey to the West," but the latest scoop (courtesy of -- who else? -- MonkeyPeaches.com) quotes China Film Group president Han Samping, whose company "is expected to co-produce the project."

Another new detail on the film, also called "The J&J Project," sheds some light on the story, which if true makes sense of the Minkoff connection:

"The J&J Project is about a New York kid [who] travels to the ancient China to rescue the Monkey King and to learn the true meaning of Kung Fu."

And just who is Rob Minkoff? He's the director of such family-friendly flicks as "The Haunted Mansion," "Stuart Little" and "Stuart Little 2," and made this little animation flick back in 1994 called "The Lion King."

The Haunted Mansion just happens to be my favorite movie, ever.

Good riddance I say. I haven't heard of this Jackson loser, but I bet he's never made ANYTHING worth while.

Yes, that happens to be my favorite too. It makes Citizen Kane look like total s***.

Anyways, I hear this one is geared towards younger audiences so...

Peter's got alot on his plate anyways. Hopefully he makes the hobbit soon...maybe if we peer pressure him into doing it he'll get started. "Come on Pete...all the cool kids want you to do it."

Peter Jackson
Um, just a heads up - Peter (the loser, as you call him) Jackson made a little indie trilogy called The Lord of the Rings.
It was low budget, and the camera work was shaky, and there was a cast of unknowns. Plus the effects were the worse thing out of hollywood - which - strangely enough the little flicks went on to gross 3 hundred and some billion worldwide combined. LOL!!!

And IMO, haunted masion was a p.o.s. But hey...

HOBBITS OF THE WORLD UNITE!!!!
I'm assuming that Reveen's comments were sarcastic, so in saying that it's now time for the hobbits of the world to unite and descend on Peter's Jackson's New Zealand home and camp out there until he agrees to film The Hobbit before it's too late. Only then should he be allowed to leave Lord of The Rings behind and move on to other movies.

RT Asian movie hype
Well said.

The "news" that the RT staff has been posting about the Li / Chan collaboration and vaguely proposed "Journey to the West" / Monkey King production has been particularly ridiculous hype.

I hope this movie fails
I love both guys to death when they were doing chinese films. Once they started making english films, they deficiencies just sick out on the screen. In their homeland, they are only famouse for their action moves and less known for their acting abilities. In their english films, they have tried very hard to act in a foreign language and they failed in almost everyone of them. Sure a few of the projects made some money, but they also have a lot of fail projects. I just wish these two could just go back to china and stay away from english movies forever.

Peter Jackson is a hack.
Peter Jackson's LOTR movies and King Kong made a lot of money, but I think they are not very good and their success is due to a very well run campaign. lets start with the lotr series first because they made peter jackson famouse. I do not care how many people love this movie, I just think these movies are way too long and contain too many scenes of digital army.

Im a little mixed by both directors
Both directors have a list of credible films, Peter Jackson the obvious supieror, but I am not sure these directors would fit with this film. One of the great thing about the recent martial films, (especially the ones from Mainland China), is they do not use computer effects to create their death-defying moves and stunts, simply there physical endurance and the use of high-wires at the most. Computer effects are simply used for enviromental detail, like in "Hero". I'm affraid this director will over use the computer effects, twisting and turning Jet-Li's body till the point that his leg extends 10 feet, he swings it in a spiral, and makes all the bad-guy fly 100 feet in the air. But then again, it worked in Kung Fu Hustle.

The Lion King was far better than anything Jackson has ever dished out. But the rest of Minkoff's resume is troubling...lets hope he can direct with the epic sweep that he demonstrated that he had with Lion King.

I agree somewhat. He's not a hack, he's competant as are his films, but highly overrated. Solid? Yes. Brilliance? Hasn't shown any....

SO, PETER JACSKON IS A HACK, HUH?
So, you think Peter Jackson is a hack because he uses digital armies and his movies are way too long. By you're rationale, you also have to believe that Stephen Spielberg, George Lucas, James Cameron and hundreds of others over the years such as Walt Disney, Cecile B. De Mille, Orson Welles and Ray Harryhausen are hacks because they have also used the same techniques as Peter Jackson to bring long and complicated stories to the screen.

You also say that Peter Jackson’s success is 'only' due to well run publicity campaigns; meaning that the hundreds of millions people around the world who have enjoyed his movies are very stupid people and you're not. I see. Care to enlighten these hundreds of millions of stupid people with your expertise as to who is brilliant then?

yes he is a hack
I enjoy the first lotr, the second one was okay and the thrid one represents jakcson's weakness. In the third one, he keeps showing his stupid digital army after another and the length is too boring. I do not care about how much money it made and I believe its success is due to a book that has been around forever. Yes, peter jackson is one big fucken hack.

Peter's early stuff is incredible Horror/Comedy material, and Heavenly Creatures is a remarkable film. The Frighteners is another enjoyable one of his, and while not brilliant, it was pushing the boundaries on SFX for that time. I'd sort of see your point if he was just using other people's effects, but WETA makes some of the greatest effects around.

And by the way, I happened to like LOTR because of the films, not the marketing campaign. And heck, I don't even like "Dragons and Wizards" kind of movies usually.

what are you on? Peter Jackson has done better movies then this new loser they got to direct this movie. Peter Jackson knows whats its like to direct an action movie while the other guy has only done kids movies. I don't what to see them wimp out the two best action star that Hong Kong has (Jet Li and Jackie Chan). It's going to make me sick.

The reason Tolkien's book has been around forever is because of its greatness, the same way Jackson's homage to the book will be around forever you moron. Look little boy, why don't you just stick to Popeye cartoons and leave the Lord of the Rings movies to the grownups. Popeye will suit your IQ and attention span and when you find out who Sweatpeas father is you come back and tell us. Now go eat your spinach before the boogeyman get's you.

What?
The haunted mansion was nothing more than throwaway entertainment. If it's your favorite movie then I really don't think any real movie buff would take you too seriously. And never heard of Peter Jackson? Are you kidding? If anyone can direct films on an epic scale it's him. For ex: Lord of the Rings Trilogy, King Kong... Think before you submit a comment kid.
