wtfcat writes: on Nov 16 2007 10:26 AM This movie is like a martial arts fans wet dream. Jackie Chan and Jet Li fighting, Yuen Wo Ping doing choreography, Peter Pau cinematographer, beautiful Yifei Liu, Rob Minkoff did Lion King. I've probably watched this preview 20 times since it was posted and it looks f***ing awesome. (Reply to this) |

kubla writes: on Nov 16 2007 11:15 AM Yeah, I never understood why there are so many white people in period pieces in Asia in Holywood. Little fun facts we've learned from Holywood: Did you know that Japanese folk heroes were really white? (Heroes) Did you know that the last samurai in all of Japan was white? How awesome is that? Cultural imperialism to an insultingly new level. Basically, any time a story calls for an Asian man, you can almost hear the producers saying, "Um, can we make that a white guy instead?" Also, this clip features some kung fu cliches that I'm really getting sick of: -Dust cloud is produced when someone kicks another person (Damn, your kung fu suit is dirty! Or was that my shoe?) -Impact of blows send a foe spinning in the air (I never understood why this is supposed to be cool, it seems a little cheesy and always breaks my suspension of disbelief) -Sleeves become flying projectiles that can break bones and pottery (How long are your sleeves exactly? And how does your kung fu make your sleeves super powered like that?) (Reply to this) |

wtfcat writes: on Nov 16 2007 01:29 PM Sounds like you don't like kung fu movies. This one doesn't sound like cultural imperialism. It's a retelling of a fable, and there have been lots of retellings of this particular fable in China. This is just a new take on it. And it's got the two greatest martial artists in film today starring together for the first time. I love Hong Kong flicks but I can enjoy a big cross-cultural epic like this as well. It's one of the movies I'm most looking forward to next year. (Reply to this) |

eastern2western writes: on Nov 16 2007 04:36 PM It is a bad sign that your major stars do not like the movie. However, the movies jackie chan does not like are always the ones that made the most money. The rush hour franchise is a good example. When the first one was made, jackie basically wanted to disowned the movie, but he changed his opinions quickly when it was the number one in the north american box office. (Reply to this) |

BlueMobius writes: on Nov 16 2007 08:27 PM This is, more or less, a live-action version of Saiyuki, a wildly popular anime. Both that and this movie are based on the same legend; the legend is actually kind of legendary in the same way Beowulf is for English readers. Also, for a guy who retired from action movies, Jet Li seems to be kicking a lot of a$$ lately (this movie, War, Mummy 3). (Reply to this) |

HughH writes: on Nov 16 2007 11:11 PM If you know anything about Jackie Chan, you know he always says stuff like that to keep his fans from hyping things like crazy. Everyone went loopy when Jackie and Jet Li announced this first collaboration- after 15 years of waiting for them to do something together. JC & JL wanted to do this movie together. They wanted to make a movie that would bring Chinese legends to the world. I hope the whole movie looks like this trailer. Jackie said their fight scenes with Master Yuen Wo Ping choreographing went perfect on the first take. I'm totally hyped for this movie. (Reply to this) |

Lux Obscura writes: on Nov 17 2007 02:17 AM trailer looks waay better tha expected but damn, lose the white kid. I mean please, dorky white kids entering fanatasy lands and saving the day is sooo never-ending story crap. (Reply to this) |

Oblivioncry writes: on Nov 17 2007 03:27 AM HughH is right, i probably think Jackie only said it to loosen the hype a bit and YES PLEASE kick out the white kid or if they really want to have a white, then fit in Steve Odekerk Kung Pow Style into it^^ (Reply to this) |

eastern2western writes: on Nov 17 2007 05:53 AM white kid is always used in big budget hollywood productions to satisfy the foreign audience. In this movie, chan and lee looked alike they are playing sidekicks to the white numero uno, but I hope I am wrong. (Reply to this) |

Oblivioncry writes: on Nov 17 2007 08:11 AM why should the foreign audience be satisfied with a white id in a all-asian ensemble? (Reply to this) |

HughH writes: on Nov 17 2007 11:21 AM The white kid isn't the star. In the trailer it says a band of unlikely warriors - there's the kid, Jackie as the drunken master character, Jet Li as the silent monk and the beautiful Yifei Liu as Golden Sparrow. Jet also plays the Monkey King. But what gets me about all these comments about the white kid is like, it's not like there aren't plenty of jet and jackie movies without a white co-star. This is the movie JC & JL wanted to make. Why are you so angry? Just don't go see it. Yifei Liu (Reply to this) |

Oblivioncry writes: on Nov 17 2007 11:57 AM ^^ i am not angry, the the white guy is the main protagonist seem to me after reading the synopsis: A discovery made by a kung fu obsessed American teen sends him on an adventure to China, where he joins up with a band of martial arts warriors in order to free the imprisoned Monkey King.
