RT-Matchity writes: on Apr 16 2008 05:44 PM In reply to this comment (#1689947) Yeah carneys, we argued about both Lethal Weapon and Batman Begins; they were both hard cuts. But we did put Lethal Weapon on the Honorable Mention list. (Reply to this) |

jokerboy1991 writes: on Apr 16 2008 05:55 PM AHHH. Wheres the fight in FIGHT CLUB where EDWARD NORTON beat himself up, also what about KUNG FU HUSTLE where CHOW fought all those dudes at the end, I also didnt see any RAGING BULL fights. Most of these are really good fights though, hey Matchity you guys should make a part 2 of best fights (that would be cool). (Reply to this) |
|
RT-Ryan writes: on Apr 16 2008 06:02 PM jokerboy1991 - Although I wasn't involved in this article, I know that we determined the Fight Club fight you mention was sort of a spoiler for the movie, so we left that out, and I know we also talked about the Kung Fu Hustle fight. Not quite sure about Raging Bull, however. (Reply to this) |

RT-Matchity writes: on Apr 16 2008 06:03 PM Hi Jokerboy, We did consider that scene from Fight Club, but we thought Evil Dead 2 was a better example of that. We might do part 2 in a few months though. (Reply to this) |

ManofStee1 writes: on Apr 16 2008 06:21 PM Hm... interesting choices. Could have used less catfights and more martial arts though... what about that scene from The Matrix Reloaded in the mansion where Neo fights with the swords and axes? That movie as a whole sucked but a few of the fights were great. And if you were going for brutality, Fight Club tops Snatch in that category. The scene where Edward Norton beats Jared Leto into the next galaxy is absolutely painful to watch. I've seen that movie countless times and still cringe at every punch. I don't disagree with the top #3, but I would have put The Matrix at 1. Just my two cents. (Reply to this) |

Sputnik99 writes: on Apr 16 2008 06:21 PM How about Superman 2? I always liked the fight between those Kryptonians... (Reply to this) |

Hamboner writes: on Apr 16 2008 06:25 PM I really think coolfight scenes are the one thing Hollywood has done right throughout the years. Sure there are some bad ones, but if I go into a movie looking to see someone get pummeled it usually works out. Oh yeah, no "Never Back Down" ? That newbie was a classic. (Reply to this) |
|
TheHerald writes: on Apr 16 2008 06:29 PM The fight scenes in Rocky III and Rocky IV are a lot more intense then the first Rocky, even though the first Rocky would be more of an iconic fight just my two cents (Reply to this) |
|
kottke123456 writes: on Apr 16 2008 06:29 PM I'd have to agree that any one of the Raging Bull fights deserves a spot on this list. I would say round 13 in the final fight between Jake LaMotta and Sugar Ray, although to be fair it was sort of one-sided. (Reply to this) |
|
RT-Matchity writes: on Apr 16 2008 06:30 PM In reply to this comment (#1689984) ManofStee1, that Matrix Reloaded scene is great, but gets a DQ because they're armed (We're planning on doing a swordfight/armed combat article at some point in the future) And the Norton/Leto bout, although brutal, is way too one-sided to make it into the top twenty (in our opinion). (Reply to this) |
|
Mr. Gitts writes: on Apr 16 2008 06:42 PM Considering that the subtitle of this list is "Total Recall", the disappointment I felt that the catfight between Sharon Stone and Rachel Ticotin from said film wasn't included is almost crushing. That was an incredible fight. Why is it not on this list? (Reply to this) |

|
RT-Ryan writes: on Apr 16 2008 06:53 PM Gandalf - 1. We limited the list to fights without weapons, which would rule out some of the best scenes in the movies you listed. As Matchity mentioned, we are planning on doing an article on best fight scenes with weapons, sometime in the future. You can be sure to find some of these movies on that list. 2. This list could have easily been comprised entirely of 20 scenes from martial arts films, but that would have been too obvious, and just a little unfair. Variety is the spice of life. jokerboy1991 writes: on Apr 16 2008 06:57 PM In reply to this comment (#1689966) Oh I just thought about that great fight in CINDIRELLA MAN where that great music comes on when his mouth guard gets knocked out then he starts to smile, that was a cool one. Oh also that steem bath scene in EASTERN PROMISES, that was pretty cool. Or in WITNES when that guy puts ice cream on FORD'S face. Also GLADIATOR, that has a bunch of incredible fight scenes you could use. (Reply to this) |

Bloody Mathias writes: on Apr 16 2008 07:36 PM Drunken Master and The Protector should be at the top of that list. You can't qualify "iconicness" or "influence" just grade based on the ***-kicking contained and having Charlie's Angels on this list does great damage. (Reply to this) |

RT-Ryan writes: on Apr 16 2008 07:55 PM vitajex - Yep, that movie did come up in our conversation. Believe me, we went through sooooo many films and fights; it was a really tough list to narrow down, and I don't envy the editors who had the job of doing so. jokerboy - Glad we could get those juices flowing. That's really what these lists are intended to do. :) sbaltys - I agree. I didn't like the movie much, but that entire last 20 minutes or so of The Protector was pretty fun to watch, especially the scene right after Tony Jaa gets stabbed. 707PG13 - I actually just recently watched Flash Point, and again, while I didn't think the movie was all that great, that final battle between Yen and Chou was spectacular. It didn't occur to me to mention it to the guys who were writing the article; I don't think any of them have seen Flash Point. (Reply to this) |
|
Bloody Mathias writes: on Apr 16 2008 07:59 PM #2 Tony Jaa clip is a joy to watch. A single take 4 min fight up a building where Tony humiliates 32, count'em 32!, guys without breaking a sweat. Broken arms, destroyed furniture, multiple opponents at once, multiple fighting styles and amazing in that no one ever thought to do it like that before. How can Rocky's unrealistic boxing stand up to that? (Reply to this) |

RT-Ryan writes: on Apr 16 2008 08:12 PM Inf3rno - I guess we should make it a bit clearer in the intro, but yeah, in order to help narrow it down, we actually decided to save sword/weapons-related fight scenes for another list. These are strictly hand-to-hand. (Reply to this) |

JackieFenderson writes: on Apr 16 2008 09:00 PM The fight from They Live has to be my #1. Totally over-the-top and yet still feels way more realistic than just about anything on the list. The fight scene from Eastern Promises would be #2. Unlike anything I've ever seen, you never feel like these guys are doing anything for a camera--the whole time it's a fight for their life. No way this is behind Karate Kid and many of the others on the list. Kill Bill deserves some sort of mention, no other movie combines different genres of fighting in the same way, but I guess every good fight in that movie includes weapons. I always loved the fight scene at the end of Under Siege, but that has weapons, too. (Reply to this) |

Cbears82 writes: on Apr 16 2008 09:23 PM Drago vs Rocky strictly in terms of fight quality was much better. But you cant argue vs the iconic part of rocky vs appolo. very glad to see the fist of legend fight, that movie was phenomenal. (Reply to this) |
|
Cbears82 writes: on Apr 16 2008 09:35 PM Ok...here is the problem i'm having. Asian cinema owned, owns, and will keep owning the fight scenes and martial arts movies. The fact that Rocky is #1 and Fist of Legend is that far down the list is ridiculous. And Neo vs. Smith was a huge dissapointment as was the entire movie. If anything, Neo vs Morpheous was a MUCH better fight scene, as well as the Neo vs. Collin Chou. Its just this simple...martial arts in the US just doesnt come close to that in Asia, and to every good fight scene in a US movie there are probably 5 better ones from asian movies. (Reply to this) |

Weather writes: on Apr 16 2008 11:40 PM Yikes....not a great list. You can't leave out the fight between Darth Vader and Luke Skywalker in The Empire Strikes Back. Also, the hammer scene in Oldboy was incredible. You've also got to have a Kurosawa film in there. Rashomon's main fight scene was unbelievable. Yes, it was sloppy, but that was why it was great. The panic in the fighters is what made it amazing. The ending of The Sword of Doom also comes to mind and deserves to be on the list above most others that are on there. It may not have been a fist fight, but it was a gunfight. Doc Holliday vs Johnny Ringo in Tombstone was tense and, while a complete domination, still fantastic. Last but certainly not least...when Li Mu Bai shows up to fight the Jade Fox in Crouching Tiger. Great scene, although short. (Reply to this) |

I understand you guys wanted variety but that's not a good excuse to put up crap ***** like Teri Hatcher vs Charlize Theron, I mean for Fs sake what is that about ? Were you guys putting up a joke list ? Is this supposed to be funny ? If not, this is FAIL. How come the Drunken Master fight scene is at 4 ? THAT IS THE GREATEST FIGHT SCENE EVER, E-V-E-R. That scene should be #1 by far, BY FAR. Bruce Lee at 11 ? Are you KIDDING me ? And Jet at 5 ? Tony Jaa at 2 above Jackie, Jet and Bruce is a disgrace. Sorry but this is just, horrible. The 3 legends of martial arts and NONE of them in the top 3. I understand putting up Hollywood crap but this is just extreme, from all those crap you should have just picked a couple and filled the others with REAL FIGHTS. I mean Charlize vs. Teri ? WTF ? Bruce Lee isn't even in the TOP 10, that's like putting up a ''greatest actors'' list and putting De Niro or Pacino at the bottom of a top 50 list. (Reply to this) |

dg8672 writes: on Apr 17 2008 06:09 AM Well, I'm glad you clarified the "no weapons" thing, because like many others, I was scratching my head. Outside the obvious ones like "Kill Bill," "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon," and the "Star Wars" films, I was looking for the fight in "Jackie Chan's First Strike" where he takes on a bunch of ninjas with a ladder. That said, great job including "Legend of Drunken Master" and "They Live." Both definitely belong. (Reply to this) |

Elixor writes: on Apr 17 2008 06:14 AM What's confusing about this list, is that it's a mixture of the most iconic fight scenes and not necessarily the 'best' fight scenes. When you say the 20 'greatest' fight scenes, I think most people equate that to the best (most bad-*** or epic), not most iconic or memorable. You can tell by some of the posts that people are confused at what the list is supposed to represent. To the people who keep suggesting fight scenes with weapons, THERE ARE MULTIPLE POSTS STATING THAT THESE ARE FIGHT SCENES WITHOUT WEAPONS!!! Read the forums you're posting in you lazy bastards. Good idea for a feature, but horrible execution because of an obvious lack of knowledge about the subject. The best example being: Bruce Lee vs. a goddamn basketball player was picked over ... Bruce Lee vs. Chuck Norris. Also, the words "Charlie's Angels" and "Bridgett Jones" should not be anywhere near this list. I'm seriously wondering whether this list is a spoof. (Reply to this) |

Other notables include, regardless of the rest of the film's quality, The Darth Maul vs. Qui Gon and Obi Wan fight sequence in "The Phantom Menace, the Bath House fight sequence from "Eastern Promises" is probably the most brutal and realistic fight sequence I have ever witnessed on film. Glaring omissions in my opinion. (Reply to this) |

Also there are numerous scenes from Police Story 1, 2, and Supercop(especially Supercop). The opening scene for Jet Li's "Unleashed" was pretty intense, or maybe his fight against the twins in "Kiss of the Dragon" Good call on Tony Jaa, although the fight against the guys after he gets stabbed is way cooler than the staircase one, IMO. Darth Maul Vs Obi Wan and Qui Gon Jinn - Star Wars Phantom Menace That was the best lightsaber/ sword battle I have ever seen , it is flawless and done tiwht suce finese and originality it should be there 1b. Obi Wan vs. Anakin Skywalker - Star Wars Revenge of the Sith If you didnt want to put the above Star Wars fight in , then this is a close second for the same reasons . The chorigraphy is flawless. 2. Neo and Trinity Vs the Swat team - The Matrix I loved the Neo /Agent Smith fight dont get me wrong , but the fight scene as Neo and Trinity enter the building to save Morpheus is one of the most amazing looking scenes ever , inovative and pure style ... 3. Cleric John Preston Vs Guards and Father - Equilibrium . Now this is my dark horse scene , as Equilibrium never did hit it big , i love the movie and this scene rivals The Matrix shoot out . If you have not seen this look it up , it is amazing !!! A gun fight that is fought like a sword fight , frickin crazy i tell ya ... 4. The Bride Vs. The Crazy 88 - Kill Bill Come on now this was a crazy sick sword fight with just enough style to make it worthy of the top 20 . If not this one the The Bride vs Elle Driver , but i prefer the Crazy 88 fight ... 5. The Spatans Vs. The Persians - 300 How could this not make the list !!! Good lord it was bloody and brutal and just savage enough to be beautiful and slick as slick can be ... So those are the 5 i missed the most from the list ... (Reply to this) |

Darkguardian writes: on Apr 17 2008 02:54 PM I don't think the Tony Jaa fight was the right one. Granted as a piece of film making that is a remarkable scene. But from a "best fight scene" standpoint I think the fight in the burning church was better, against the brazilian capoeria. The whole scene in the church was insane but its actually three seperate fights. It would have to be limited to that first one because the fight immediately following contained weapons. Lee, Chan and Li are all legends yes but my personal feeling is that Jaa has the physical ability to surpass them. Its evident in both his movies and worth noting there are no wires used in his films, his style is brutal and ridiculous to watch. That said, I don't think the right scene was chosen for Bruce Lee either, that was a great fight but not his absolute best. (Reply to this) |

mightyfooda writes: on Apr 18 2008 07:57 AM In reply to this comment (#1692056) I musta missed the no weapons part. One thing I think is funny are the people complaining about people complaining. What do you think the ability to post is for, to tell them all how great they are? I agree with the kid that said it should have been called most Iconic Fight Scenes. Either far too much, or little, effort went into figuring this list out. Another movie that got dissed was Dragon: the Bruce Lee story. That movie had GREAT fight scenes in it, and doesn't get the respect that it deserves, and makes me wonder why Jason Scott Lee's career went in the crapper. Also, the complete lack of Van Damme is unnerving. Bloodsport will always be my favorite "I am only watching this for the fights" movie. If for the unintentional comedy alone! "I too, am here for the Kumite!" (Reply to this) |

sophosmoros writes: on Apr 18 2008 12:34 PM In reply to this comment (#1692033) 1. I didn't think the Charlie's Angel scene was so crappy. For what it was - a stylized, somewhat tongue-in-cheek remake of an already campy TV show from the 70's - I thought the movie AND the fight scene were actually very good. 2. I do agree that there's some serious inconsisetncy going on here, though. And certainly, it must be very difficult to put together a list like this. I think that it may be important to better define the list's parameters and set those out along with the list, so as not to leave readers confused. Also, aside from some fight scenes that are bookended by gun use, are we supposed to ignore the use of the garotte in From Russia With Love and the pool cue in Road House, or are these not considered weapons? RT-Matchity writes: on Apr 18 2008 12:41 PM In reply to this comment (#1692220) Hey Sputnick, (Still reading the comments - the flames go with the territory) You raise a good point, and one could definitely call this an "iconic" list. Using the word "best" is admittedly very provacative, and pretty subjective for that matter. But we also ended up coming to the conclusion that the most iconic fight scenes have to be placed high, simply because of their impact on pop culture. So, in some respects, the more people recognize a particular fight, the more impact it's probably had, and that gets considered in the qualitative analysis. But that's not the only consideration, otherwise the scene from The Protector doesn't get to #2. The stunning level of martial and technical mastery that's demonstrated in that scene make up for the fact that not a lot of people have seen the film. But show the average person that clip and they just gape. By contrast, some of the fight scenes we considered don't hold up as well when you take them out of context - the final scene from Martial Club, for instance. From a martial arts standpoint, it's pretty technically impressive, but it just didn't quite make the cut. Ultimately we had to make some really tough decisions to cap the list at 20. For instance, "the no weapons" rule DQs the Oldboy corridor scene, anything from the Star Wars trilogy, Gladiator, the Kill Bill fights (we DQ'd the Beatrix/Elle scene because they both have swords), even though those are all awesome fights. When we do a list of great sword fights, a lot of those will come up. (The Matrix and Charlie's Angels fights stay in because all parties end up unarmed very early in each fight). Also, I realize I'm probably just feeding the flames here, but we did consider that Bruce Lee/Chuck Norris fight, but it's really not that great. Chuck pretty much gets his *** handed to him, and we kept out some of the other seriously one-sided beatdowns, such as Norton/Leto in Fight Club, or Lee/Ohara in Enter the Dragon. We spent a long time looking at a lot of fight scenes, and but for one exception, we really did consider all of the fights that people have been bringing up (we probably should have expanded the "honorable mention" list). But as I see the passion here, I'm thinking we'll do a countdown of the 50 or 100 greatest fights at some point (probably in the fall), and let the community help determine the rankings. Some of the choices belong up there, like Jackie's legendary end battle in Drunken Master II (NOT "Legend of Drunken Master," you English-dub-lovin' Johnny Come Latelys... call it by its correct title!), but next time, get some actual martial arts aficionados to come up with the list. While the poll will likeky find more contemporary scenes than some of the older classics you can adjust it by demographic. Some of the scenes listed here hardly qualify. I can think of many more memorable fights than these in film. For instance, in Shane the bar fight with Alan Ladd and Van Heflin vs the rival ranchers henchmen. In Hard Times, the fight between Bronson and the huge bald guy in the cage match was something to behold. What about the classic John Wayne fight that became the focus of the film A Quiet Man. The fight between Charlton Heston and Gregory Peck in a Big Country was one of the few that made a case for not fighting. The Kill Bill movie had a very interesting Katana fight if that qualifies. georgiaslop writes: on Aug 05 2009 06:37 AM not many oldies on here -- ever see the robert mitchum/robert preston (yes, the "music man") fight scene in a darkened bar in the western 'blood on the moon'? director asked mitchum -- based on his experience in barrooms -- to make it look realistic and not necessarily pretty. also, one that's fairly well-known: the top-of-the-train scene in 'breakheart pass' -- charles bronson and archie moore. and a special category for fights with one-armed men ('evil dead 2' excluded) should be created. two that come to mind: spencer tracy and ernest borgnine in 'bad day at blackrock', and kirk douglas and mean (mexican?) dude in 'lonely are the brave.'
