Jake Gyllenhaal to Star in Joe Namath Biopic
Plans to prep for role by shaving legs, harrassing Suzy Kolber.

Jake Gyllenhaal is going Broadway. Broadway Joe, that is.

Variety reports that Universal has tapped Gyllenhaal to play Joe Namath in a biopic to be scripted (post-strike, natch) by David Hollander. From the article:

When Namath emerged from Bear Bryant's football program at the U. of Alabama, the upstart American Football League was the stepchild to the powerhouse National Football League. Sonny Werblin, who'd left MCA after the Justice Dept. broke up Lew Wasserman's company, knew the value of star power and was determined to use it when he bought the Jets. He outbid the NFL, paid Namath a record $400,000 salary and turned him loose on New York. The handsome nonconformist became a sensation, on the field, in nightclubs and on Madison Avenue as the first star to become a magnet for commercials.

After backing up his guarantee that the Jets would beat the heavily favored Baltimore Colts in Super Bowl III, Namath put the AFL on equal footing with the NFL, paved the way to a merger and helped establish football as a TV sport. He accomplished all of this on knees so bad that draft board doctors refused to send him to Vietnam for fear that they would give out on the battlefield.

"Most of the stuff you saw in 'Forrest Gump,' Joe lived through all of it," said Jimmy Walsh, who first met Namath on the Alabama campus and has worked with him ever since. They witnessed the struggle for civil rights in Alabama, the sexual revolution and Vietnam.

The project's lack of a script won't be an issue for some time -- Gyllenhaal is currently filming Jim Sheridan's Brothers, and has an untitled Doug Liman project lined up next.

I wouldn't really call Gyllenhall "over-rated". I don't really think he's that kind of star. He can be good in certain roles, but he's sort of a one-trick pony so far, like he's Tobey Maguire's twin brother.

Gyllenhaal is most noted for his dead-pan roles. I don't see him pulling off the "over-the-top" personality of Broadway Joe.

Come on. He was a great QB (for playing on the Jets).

Seriously though, here are his numbers:

TD-INT 173-220
Yards 27,663
QB Rating 65.5

And people have been bagging on my boy Philip Rivers this year? Look at all those interceptions, Broadway Joe!

You can't compare modern QB numbers to those of decades past.

No, you're right. Honestly all that matters is wins/losses as far as I'm concerned. But now we're turning into a sports board.

rocknblues81, his statistics may be slighty overated but u have to consider

he was star of arguably one of the most important nfl games ever. he is a deserving nfl

icon and hall-famer. please our hatred should be put to the producers choosing jake as

the man to play broadway joe, i mean give me a break. i think its time for some

suggestions, Rt bloggers namath's counting on us...

Thanks for that video clip Arendr, I had to change my shorts when I saw that live.

This is an interesting prospect for a movie, I suppose. However, I don't believe that any Jet, ever, should get a film about them because they are such a lousy team (this one season aside).

With that said, this sounds like a movie Will Ferrel should star in and run around naked in... it would be quite a conclusion to the Mediocre American Man Trilogy.

emmitt smith is the most overrated. his stats are more padded than a middle school girl's bra. rosie odonnell could have run through the holes THE BEST OFFENSIVE LINE in the league gave him.
