Not being a dishonest person at heart, he leaves an IOU which he sincerely intends to honor. Coincidentally, famed U.S. Marshall Pat Garrett is in Santa Maria at the same time and takes up chase. Ross manages to elude him until a final showdown where Garrett finally catches up with him on a range where he had stopped to help nurse a family of Mexicans dying of diphtheria.
