Consensus: While frothy to a fault, Four Weddings and a Funeral features irresistibly breezy humor, and winsome performances from Hugh Grant and Andie MacDowell.

Genre: Comedies

However, Charles's hopes of romance are dashed when Carrie announces she must return to America the next morning. The two continue to cross paths at other people's weddings, never finding each other at a time when both are single. As all of Charles's friends find love, he's left wondering if he will ever be the one going to the altar. With subtle and lighthearted storytelling, director Mike Newell makes viewers feel intimate with characters who are shown in their happiest and saddest moments. The talented, funny cast--including Kristin Scott Thomas, Simon Callow, and Rowan Atkinson--portrays a very convincing group of friends in search of true love. [More]

The colorful cast brings it all home, and the film has become something of a minor classic in its genre.

A British comedy that's classy and commercial -- and, most important, very, very funny.

The simplest and most honest expression of praise that I can offer Mike Newell's latest movie is that it represents two hours of solid movie magic.

Four Weddings is more a romantic screwball comedy, one is as intoxicated by words, dialogue and characters as by love.

There are movies so breezy, even flimsy, that you can enjoy them as genial providers of an evening's entertainment yet forget all about them by the time you leave the multiplex.

Comparisons to another Grant named Cary are not entirely out of place.

A very funny and warm effort, Four Weddings strives to recapture the screwball sensibility of another era, succeeding to a surprising degree.

This is a decidedly lightweight film but well made and one that has occasionally very funny gags.

This elegantly shot, classically structured British comedy is an updated version of Hollywood screwball comedies. Despite its makers' claims, it's not as radical as they hold--unless you consider a happy gay couple a revolutionary idea.

If ever a film resembled a wedding cake it is Four Weddings and a Funeral, a multi-tiered confection with a romantic spirit and an enchantingly pretty veneer.

Truly beguiling romantic comedy is one of the hardest things for a modern film to pull off, but a winning British team has done it in Four Weddings and a Funeral.
