Franchesca Page (1997)
Deliberately campy and starring drag queen Varla Jean Merman (aka Jeff Roberson) this backstage musical comedy centers on a pushy mother who fills in for her stage-frightened daughter at the 11th hour and becomes a big star. The whole mess begins when a cast member of the Broadway disco spectacular The Lady Does It All inexplicably dies. Wanting her daughter to be the star she never was, ex-chorine Rita Page (Merman) insists that her daughter Franchesca (Franchesca Leon) try out for understudy. She is terrible, but producer Veronica (Rossy de Palma) an oversexed dominatrix demands that she be hired anyway. More disasters follow. Poor innocent, untalented Franchesca has no idea that she is but a small potato in Veronica's plan to ruin the show. Meanwhile, Rita pushes and pushes Franchesca during rehearsal, showing her the steps and helping her with lines so that when Franchesca finally chickens out, Rita is ready. … More
