Well, when he says 3-D, he's referring to the 3-D glasses you wear to give the 3-D effect. You know? The thing that all the trailers always pointed out. "Frankenweenie, in the amazing, spellbinding third dimension!!!" Nobody's offended because all the animators are smart enough to get that.

Also, stop motion animation is 3D animation....

I hate the 3D hype and am glad the 3D was used limitedly here.. great film beautifully animated with flawless stop motion. Looks way better than ParaNorman and Hotel Transylvania.
