This arty drama moves between past and present as it tells the tale of a young author and the influence his mother had upon his life. The writer is Frank Bois, a dwarf in his mid-thirties. He is first seen bringing his manuscript to an agent's office. The autobiographical story of his boyhood, spent in a tiny Irish village, is well done, and he snags a major publisher right from the start. Much of it is about his French mother, Bernadette, who snuck into Ireland on a US naval ship at the end of WW II after she was impregnated by a GI. She later ends up sheltered by a kindly immigration officer, Jack Kelly with whom she has an affair. After she bears Frankie, the Kelly family takes her into their home and it is Jack who teaches him to love the cosmos and astrology, something he has integrated into his story. His mother also believed she had a psychic gift; it was this gift that ultimately caused her tragic demise, and Frankie never has completely recovered from it.
