Qi Lei is a young performance artist whose depression has driven him to commit suicide in a performance piece which would consist of encasing himself in a block of ice until he suffers hypothermia. While his girlfriend is sympathetic, his sister, whom he lives with, fails to take him seriously. This unsettling, but largely unpolitical film was banned in China for its portrayal of angry, depressed youth. Never allowed to be shown there, the film was shot in 1994 and secretly brought to Amsterdam for editing. [Less]

An early and provocative work from the director of the exquisite Beijing Bicycle.

It was a thought-provoking film, but in a very manipulative way.
