Audience Reviews for Funkytown

When will the definitive Disco/Glitter Era film be made? What is the problem with all these directors and producers who strip the Studio 54 era of it's true debt to gay culture? The disco era, which for the straight audience, is best portrayed in Saturday Night Fever, has yet to be properly dramatized in a mainstream film. It is as if the entire urban populace of THE WORLD is ashamed or wants to deny or forget their participation in the metrosexuality of the mid 70s to 80s. Any film which tries to capture the era without acknowledging its gay roots and influence can not possibly be successful. Between the possible oversight by P.T. Anderson on "Boogie Nights" and what studio hacks dictated in "54", "Funkytown" is a very weak attempt. By 2011, when this film was released, there is no excuse for the sexual neutering or tameness Funkytown provides. The marketing was so deceptive - there must have been a huge outcry- because the cover to the DVD I bought featured Justin Chatwin. Chatwin had a disappointingly small role. Daniel Roby really missed the mark in this production. I can't imagine spending any additional money on anything Roby is involved in. When thinking about Funkytown, I hope you will save your time and money.
