"Style Over Substance" ??

"Style over substance" ? Gee maybe they should have let Tarantino make this thing. That's his specialty.

I can't wait for Tarantino's gangster movie. I know it'll be better than this.

I guess your specialty is trolling on good movies because some completely different movie isn't getting good reviews. Don't poke fun at Tarantino just because Gangster Squad isn't as well received.

Agreed. I love how everyone loves Django Unchained but most people hate this.

i was worried when I saw this advertised that it would be flashy but lacking story and characters, guess I was right. Guess I'll see Zero Dark Thirty tomorrow instead.

Wise decision. The only reason to see this movie is to see some of our favorite actors on screen. Otherwise, so not worth seeing. I paid $10.50 to see this movie in which I was only mildly entertained.

Yeah, that's what I heard too. I was hoping you would be able to find more information, but that's ok. I'd love to see how the film turns out.

I find it pretentious that the critics put violence as a negative in the general consensus.

I don't think that [most] critics regard violence as a negative. It's when a movie substitutes violence for a progressive story line that is held as a negative; and rightly so. There are many movies which are loaded with violence that the critics praise. Such as Django for instance. Django is more violent than this, yet the critics loved it. The distaste for the movie comes from the awful writing, directing etc. The idea of this movie is spectacular and had the potential to be great, instead they turned it into a comic book, shoot-em-up popcorn flick.

You see, that consensus I have no problem with, I just find it odd that the site added excess violence as a negative for a film, especially a gangster movie.

Saw it Friday morning. I was really let down. Here is a precursor to that comment though. L.A. Confidential is one of my all time favorite movies. I love the film noire genre. The reason the violence is being panned is because it goes well over the top for what actually happened. The car chases and gun fights are over stylized to the point of using slow motion. It detracts from the horror of violence by adding this "hell yeah!" element. The violence in other movies is praised because it is terrifying, not exhilarating.
