Read the book, and since it was a pure narrative I'm guessing the film is an entirely different animal altogether. But so far, it seems the only reason to go see this is to watch Sean Penn go balls out in a meaty Al Capone-ish role. I'll probably see it but when it comes out on Blu-ray.
