Alex Proyas directs with high energy and brash innocence and has a grand time putting his technology and technique to work in such a lark.

Acclaimed director Alex Proyas (DARK CITY, THE CROW) puts his visionary spin on the story of an Australian garage band that is willing to do just about anything to make it to the top - or at least a stage. Through a comic chain of events involving blackmail and brute force, the band begins to realize that real life sometimes has even more stomach-turning drops and g-force than the rock 'n' roll roller coaster they've been waiting to get on. Following its 2002 Australian release, GARAGE DAYS received three nominations from the Australian Film Institute including Best Supporting Actress for Maya Stange (IN A SAVAGE LAND). Headlining the cast is an ensemble of Australia's most promising young talent including Kick Gurry (BUFFALO SOLDIERS, LOOKING FOR ALIBRANDI), who stars as Freddy, the charmingly naive lead singer of the band. The film reunites Gurry with Australian Film Institute Award-winning actress Pia Miranda (LOOKING FOR ALIBRANDI), who co-stars as the band's sassy bass player. Newcomers Chris Sadrinna and Brett Stiller round out the band's line-up. Maya Stange (IN A SAVAGE LAND) co-stars as Kate. Previous Australian Film Institute Award winners Russell Dykstra (SOFT FRUIT) and Andy Anderson ("Halifax f.p") join the cast as the band's well-meaning "manager", and a nostalgic rocker from the 70s. Yvette Duncan (PRAISE) and Marton Csokas (LORD OF THE RINGS) join the ensemble in supporting roles. GARAGE DAYS is a Mystery Clock Cinema Production co-financed by Fox Searchlight Pictures and the Australian Film Finance Corporation. Fox Searchlight will distribute the film worldwide. [More]

Reviews for Garage Days
Strip away the music video-style imagery and eighties-flavored rock soundtrack from Garage Days and you're left with a forced, self-consciously 'wacky' comedy that's more frantic than genuinely funny.
For all its libidinous, chemically suggestive bombast, it's essentially a sweet-natured, modestly likable little film.
After spending 10 minutes in the company of such characters ... I began to wish that I was watching a Kenny G biopic instead.
This movie could only work if the jokes were funny, and writers David Warner and Michael Udesky don't deliver the goods.
Proyas...has made a film that resembles "Trainspotting" if it were sweet instead of edgy. Unfortunately, his third feature seems more like a first effort
Swatting flies with Buicks is effective, but it's overkill at best and showing off at its worst.
It is one of the most sheerly entertaining films of the season and has all the ingredients to become a major hit with audiences.
Feels like a filmmaker trying to get in touch with roots he doesn't really have.
The visual trickery can be cool, and in fact the second major hallucination sequence features more imagination than the entirety of The Hulk
It's clear that the band's internecine struggles -- even with their ante upped by infidelity, addiction, and pregnancy -- aren't going to provide enough grist for Proyas's visual mill.
Proyas and his cast obviously are having a very good time, infusing each scene with youthful energy and taking their audience along for the ride.
In trying to create an air of libertine cool, Proyas succeeds in looking like someone who's trying too hard.
Alex Proyas, coming off darker material, sets himself a huge challenge in taking on a genre that requires outcomes of dreams satisfied. It’s an American genre. He subverts it. And it isn’t totally successful, but the flaws are almost too small to identify
