Disney did a really good job with this DVD set and I hope sales were good enough to encourage them to release the rest of the Gargoyles episodes as well as other Disney Afternoon favorites such as Duck Tales, Chip 'N Dale: Rescue Rangers, Tale Spin, and Darkwing Duck. Gargoyles protect, that is their purpose in
life. It's 994 CE in Scotland and Goliath and 5 of his clan members are the only survivors after the humans they swore to protect betray them. They are frozen in stone by a magical spell that can only be broken when "the castle rises above the clouds." 1000 years have passed and a wealthy business man named Xanatos has purchased the castle and moves it piece by piece to New York City. He rebuilds the castle atop a skyscraper and above the clouds, hoping the legends he's learned of are true and that the gargoyles will come alive. The gargoyles do indeed awaken, but are shocked to find the world changed during their slumber. How will they cope? Who can they trust? And what is their purpose now? Watch to find out. Unlike other Disney animated series, this one is more dramatic and darker. It'll entertain most definitely, but because it has a good intriguing story and it'll make you think about the human condition like The Incredibles did. Literature fans will get a kick out of the Shakespeare references and fans of legends and myths will love the fantasy elements. There's also some things for the Sci Fi lovers. The animation is some of the best from the '90s, very clean and fluid, and it has some of the best action scenes animated too. The characters are very endearing and likable, even the evil ones. This set includes all 13 episodes of Season 1, the first 5 episodes making up the introduction, a format first used in She-Ra, Princess of Power. The creator and producer Greg Weisman also gives a commentary for the first five. Keith David, the voice of Goliath, comes in for "Awakening," parts 3-5. The Gargoyles Fan Website
