Lenni (Regina Orioli) is the meek, bespectacled girlfriend of butch mechanic Stella (Maya Sansa), and together they run a gas station/coffee shop. They live in a middle-of-nowhere paradise that is soon lost with the arrival of Lenni's controlling, disapproving mother (Mariella Valentini) who tries to drag her daughter back home. Soon Lenni's mother is lying dead, and hell is getting ready to break loose. The girls take off on a road trip with mom's corpse in the trunk, but their nocturnal journey is repeatedly interrupted. They encounter a cynical priest, a leaky gas tank, Stella's wayward dog, and--worst of all--a car driven by two crazy, menacing Italian men and their video-camera happy girlfriend who pursue them all through the night. Propelled by Stambrini's inspired visual style and a cool, rock-tinged soundtrack, GASOLINE contains no dull stretches. Valentini and Orioli are cute and believable as the girls; their sex scenes generate honest steam and if their relationship seems somewhat shallow it's only an intentional indication of their character's youthful lack of self-knowledge. GASOLINE is high-grade stuff in its genre of romantic sagas where doomed outsiders hit the road with a dead body in the trunk. [More]

Although inviting comparisons to such movies as 'Thelma & Louise,' 'Bound' and 'Boys Don't Cry,' this dark nighttime film stands on its own quite nicely.

Containing elements from more than a few of its similarly themed predecessors, the loopy but tautly staged Gasoline still manages to be engrossing throughout its brief running time.

Stambrini and her cinematographer, Fabio Cianchetti, give the proceedings a high-tech, energetic look that keeps the thrill and entertainment levels high.

For those who just can't get enough of Thelma & Louise or any of its numerous imitators, this birra's for you.

Devoid of originality, Gasoline is at least a model of modesty -- a road movie that goes nowhere slowly, and ends up where it began.

Stambrini's dialogue seems especially dull, and the screenplay lacks dramatic urgency.

A film that feels like a Europeanized compendium of just about every indie alt-action movie cliche of the past decade.

As time tells (remember The Girl?), decidedly lesbian features, unless they have something more enlightening to show or tell, should stick the pornography market.

By the time we get to the big finish, it feels as if we've merely been poked repeatedly in the ribs with a really good-looking stick.

Benzina has a hip look to it. The film is set in a particularly bleak urban landscape and has plenty of noir elements and edge, visually speaking, but the story is ridiculous.
